Porting to Boost and Need New Phone

So I've had an iPhone Xs on a contract with Telstra for around 9 months but it just far too expensive for what I'm getting and I'm going to port to Boost and get the $150 12 month SIM but I need a new phone for it to go in.

I know it gets asked a lot but there seems to be a few common recommendations. I'm looking at spending between $300 - $500.

I liked the look of LG V30+ and saw it was recently on sale for $399 which seems really good, are there any other phones that might compare/be a bit better for around the same price like the Nokia 7.1 or something from Huawei? I've read about Band 28 and NFC and believe I need these too? Not fussed on whether it's Android/iOS.

I only use my phone for texts/calls and the occasional Youtube video but tend to take a fair amount of pictures as I have 2 young kids.

Happy to wait for something to go on sale again for 1-3 months at most, I just want to stop paying Telstra an obscene amount of money.

You'll have to pay out the iPhone if you break your contract with Telstra anyway (probably around $1225, being ($1879/24) * 15 months remaining).

May as well hang onto the iPhone as it will have done a decent chunk of depreciation…

    • My pay out is only around $400 because silly me signed up for a lease contract so I don’t even own the phone which is one of the reasons I want to get out.

        Ouch!

As you're less than 12 months in, you may still have to buy out the phone though (with a 27% discount on new being 9 months @ 3%, so ~$1371) plus any ETC. See the Device Lease Contract terms at: https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consume… (while these refer to Swap Plans, I think they apply to newer lease plans too).

        See also https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/mobile-lease-plans

At any rate, you should speak to Telstra…

        • Thanks for this.

Just spoke with them and I'm 10 months into my contract so I have to wait another 2 months before I can hand the phone back and pay the lower fee.

  • Kangal has provided a good list earlier, but also have a look at Mintt if you only use it for calls/messages and photos.
