I got my Tenda MW6 and so now I need to......

Hi all

I finally took the plunge and purchased a pair of MW6 which I am connecting up to my AC68U router. I have read to run the MW6's in bridge mode and disable the wifi on my AC68U. Is that correct?

If it is then I presume I would go using the SSID and password on the bottom of the Nova to connect.

Is that right?

Any other tips with these devices that people have found when using them?

Cheers

  • That's correct. If you want to continue using your AC68U as a router, put the Tenda into Bridged mode and turn off wifi on the AC68U. You'll need the app on your phone to configure the Tenda and change SSID etc. Make sure to do a firmware update on them also through the app.

The Tenda app will prompt you to create an account for external access. I wouldn't do that. No need. If really paranoid you could also block the MW6 internet access so they can't talk back to Tenda (probably not required)

    • Magic, thanks for the info.

  • Just another query on this….. Is it possible to force a client to use a specific frequency? I am keen to have certain clients only use the 2.4Ghz band and others the 5Ghz.

Couldn't see anywhere where I can set that.

    Cheers

    • Nah it's not possible. But with a mesh you should have less requirement to force devices off 5ghz. It should maange it fairly well itself.

  • I've had these for months and get dropouts constantly and times where they do not connect to eachother no matter what I do
Only 2 units connected by Ethernet

    Main node plugged into modem
2nd node plugged into ethernet cable <..> port

Can someone explain to me what I'm doing wrong

Have turned Wi-Fi off modem and have tried both bridge mode and dchp

  • Hi all,

I was using the RT68U as wifi router with my adsl modem. We recently had nbn installed and the ndc was installed at the end of the house, necessitating the router to be moved there as well (it was in the middle of the house). Wifi performance is suffering at the other end of the house.

I have a 2 pack mw6 that I could use to replace the rt68u as wifi router. Aside from the ac1200 vs ac1900 difference, is there a reason to keep the rt68u as a router (with the mw6s as wifi)?

    Thanks.

    • Depends on your use case. I use mine running Merlin firmware to facilitate VPN client and server connectivity as well as a raft of other enhanced functionality.

      • My use is quite simple: web browsers, netflix, steam/epic, occasional torrents and google assisted lights. Looking at perhaps 8-12 devices connected at the same time.

Is there a case to keep the rt68u?

        • So you aren't running custom firmware on the router. If you aren't using the functionality and don't foresee that you would start then you could turn it off and offload.

Why don't you config your MW6 and then power off your 68U for say a month. If there isn't something missing then maybe you then choose to offload.

Saves jumping the gun straight away and then going uh-oh later.

          • @jollster101: Ok. Will do that this weekend (I still have to go to work these days).

In the search on this topic, I stumbled on AiMesh which is Asus's software that allows linking of 2 or more of Asus routers to create a mesh network. Have you or anyone tried this out?

            • @ddhar: I haven't. I did look at it but the second AC66U unit I used to have didn't support it so I never bothered going any further.

Have a look on the snbforums for info, there are really good resources over there for all things Asus and more.
