Just Got NBN! Got a Bunch of Questions - Pls Help!

Hi all,

I've just moved to a brand new townhouse, waited 2 months for NBNco to install the utility box outside my home, and now i see i have nbn available! I am told I have HFC NBN.

Is it true that HFC type NBN connections will be provided with a free modem from NBNco? Can anybody please confirm if this is true/false?

I'm also reading about different RSPs throttle activities. If I wanna torrent, YouTube/Netflix/gaming.. how can i know if a particular RSP will throttle my activities?

All the help and information you can provide is appreciated :)

Cheers

**EDITED: I actually have a Netgear Orbi mesh router ready to go.
From my understanding, if NBNco supplies me the Arris modem, then i can BYO and all i need is the internet service?? Please confirm if I correctly understood this

the modem is generally supplied by the internet provider you connect with

Some are supplied by NBN… depends on the type of connection.
Best to speak to NBN. When we had ours available they were the most informed on what to do.
Some info should have been left in your letterbox??

HFC modem (Arris brand) is always supplied by NBNCo.
The ISP supplies a router which they may stupidly refer to as a modem.
You don't necessarily have to use it, can use your own but the TPG group of ISPs (TPG, iiNet, Internode etc.) require VLAN tagging that may not be supported by all routers.

      • Probably gets confusing because it also may contain telephone functionality. It's kindof the modem [replacement] box they can't be bothered trying to explain. For many, it's the box that sits between the phone and socket where the modem used to be.

        • I have a Netgear Orbi router mesh ready to go. Just need a confirmation whether NBNco will supply it or ISP.

I do all of that plus Sonarr + Radarr for my Plex server, I start by googling reviews and forum post's about whatever ISP So Whirlpool forums, Ozbargain forums/past deals comments, there social media pages comments.
Ive been with TPG, MyRepublic, Aussie Broadband and currently Kogan NBN they've all been decent without issues Aussie Broadband obviously the best.

  • Curious what is rsp throttle activity?

    • Any Vocus re-sellers it seems. My understanding is that Vocus bandwidth-manages its re-sellers, and therefore a lot of the control is with Vocus and not the ISP you sign up to. There have been reports that Vocus throttles torrents.

      • how do you know which company is a reseller?

        • Usually you can find out by researching on here or Whirlpool.

  • With HFC NBN will supply a modem. You connect your router to that. With NBN ISP's are actually called RSP's (Retail Service Provider) but ISP and ISP are interchangeable really. If you want to use a phone line with some RSP's you have to use their router as they encrypt the username and password on the router via a provisioning server. Support will not be able to provide those details either. This tends to be the case with Telstra, Optus and a few large providers others. Generally speaking the routers that the RSP's supply are garbage. Personally I use Aussie Broadband. Not the cheapest out there but they are pretty up front with their customers, have local support and BYO a router with them is fine and they'll make a best effort to support it. The Asus RT-AC68U is a great BYO router.

  • In simpler terms, NBN will give you a little black box that connects to their network.
But you can't plug a computer or anything into the black box. You need to connect the black box to a router, and then your devices to the router.
Most ISP's will either make you pay for the router, or bundle it into a contract. These usually come pre-configured and work out of the box.
Alternatively you can buy your own router from a store, but you'll need your ISP's help to configure it.

    • You can connect a PC directly to the HFC modem.

      • Are you sure? I don't believe it has any DNS / DHCP functionality

        • It doesn't but a PC can handle PPPoE. Just like the old dial-up days but faster.

    • Is the black box the little thing thats drilled onto the outside of my house on HFC?

  • Hi all I updated the post:

I actually have a Netgear Orbi router. I intend to use this as a Wifi system around the house.

    • The Arris modem is given by the people that install the cable in your house, you call the ISP and request an NBN install, the ISP then looks at their system to see if you already have a modem or not and arranges a NBNCo installer to install cabling/modem if needed.

Some ISP's have a weird setup for NBN, others its just plug-and-play, who are you going with?

      • from my understanding this is what i know..

NBN contractor came and installed the utility box on an outside wall, where a conduit (which leads to the inside of the house where there are plus for the network cable). The contractors told my wife the modem is not provided by them.

So now i got an orbi and want to use that as the router for the house.

sowith what you mentioned… i'm not sure if i'm gonna get the arris modem. Sounds like i will just have to get a new modem. unless i can use my old modem from when i was with telstra for cable internet (at a different premise). Can i use that? If i cant i need to buy a new modem. BUt i read the ones provided with palns are very bad unless it's enough for bridging to the router of choice (the orbi)?

Anyway… i am thinking of going with Aussie BB (people are vouching they're so good) or optus (as i have a mate who lives 500m away from me and he says he has "decent" speeds).

        • That is the modem (the way you are describing it sounds that way). Go with either, if your mate is getting decent speeds, you should as well.

AussieBB and Optus are both virtually plug-and-play, ask them for instructions for a BYO router.

  • We believe the Orbi supports PPPoE so you can connect this direct to NBN arris modem.

PM me for details of some internet plans

    • i'm thinking of going for tier 50 plans.

either Ausie BB (for reliabilty) or Optus (based on word of mouth from a mate who lives 500m from me on same street).

  • Just had an HFC NBN provisioned the other day and NBN Co installed an NTD (modem) for free.

I chose to BYO my own router instead of getting one from the RSP.
