Cheap, small Aussie Souvenirs (Melbourne)

Son is going overseas on Tuesday & is looking for some cheap Aussie souvenirs to give/swap with other 17/18 year olds he'll meet from 60 different countries (in Taiwan).

So far we've thought of Caramello Koalas (may melt), tiny jars of vegemite, Koala clips, Allens Snakes … maybe some of those mini traffic signs like "Kangaroos crossing" or "Beware: Crocodiles" …

Up to $2 an item seems about the right price … and a lot of the stuff you find in the tourist shops would be good but without fancy prices.

Any suggestions?

The $2/tourist shops on Swanston street are good. I've had a similar situation as yours and I bought an Australian clock (kangaroos, boomerangs) set to Australian time. Say something clever like when you call me you'll know what time it is.
