Because the printers are the loss leaders
And hence the ink are the profits

Yep - when you buy a printer the #1 criteria is the cost of consumables.

A carefully chosen printer could cost you 1/5 or even a 1/10th the cost in ink, compared to the $29 multifunction jobs.

I know… I bought three colour cartridges yesterday and I could have bought a new printer for the amount it cost!

  • Yes, you're better off just purchasing a new printer with a lot of inkjets and cheap lasers as opposed to buying the consumables.

yes but most new printers are now coming with 'starter inks' only, not full ink cartridges.

    • any recommendations?

    Hey,

You could try setting up a CIS for your printer. Check out http://www.rihac.com.au/ciss-systems-c-26.html for more details.

that's like, buy a product from us but you'll need to keep buying the accessories from us or you wont' be able to use that product! how fascist! Haha, but seriously I bought a desktop the other year and it included a printer. After using all the ink up, I've never used that printer ever again, because I just can't afford to buy the ink!

  • I had a friend who used to work for HP and he always tell us that ink makes the most profit for the company

its something people always need so they can gouge whatever they want for it

  • ALSO REMEMBER - the cheap printers use cartidges with a electronic chip inside, so if you refill them they won't work. For those ones, the generic ink won't work either.

Note you CAN get devices to reset the chips.

    Here's 2 on DealExtreme http://s.dealextreme.com/search/%2bchip+%2bresetter

    Here's Epson software-based (only selected models) http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml

  • its stupid how u can get a cheaper printer (with colour ink and black ink)
than buy the colour ink and black ink!

    one tip when buying printers
check the price of the ink!
i got suckered with a bother printer but the ink was more expensive than the printer lol

      this

yes but most new printers are now coming with 'starter inks' only, not full ink cartridges.

Starter ink cartridges have lower "pages per cartridge" than the ones that can be bought alone

  • can anyone tell me where can i find similar item like this that much cheaper? can't find in dealextreme web site. i need for my canon mx340. thanks

    ebay is your friend! :)

    • i have checked it, cost more than this link, i am looking some chinese website similar like dx that might offer this item with 50% or more discount than that link

      • I bought a CISS from Rihac around three years ago now for my Epson. They were the cheapest at that time. I bought the ink from eBay. :) However, I probably wouldn't buy a CISS again as I don't print in high enough volumes anymore to keep the ink from drying out in the tubing and having to bleed it back through again each time I want to print in colour. In the end it's cheaper and less labour intensive to print up photos from Costco/Big W etc.

      • Possibly, I can't be bothered looking for your model; but I got mine for $55 shipped a year or so ago…and the same seller got down as low as $42 last time I checked. Was considerably cheaper than anywhere else at the time, including Rihac.

Just buy a chip resetter & refill them yourself IMHO. As carlenet points out, you've really gotta be using them heaps for a CISS to be worthwhile.

      • i am printing photo that's why prefer this ciss

        • Fair enough, if you're doing quite a few on a regular basis then yeah a CISS is definitely the way to go! :)
