Split System Annual Servicing Yes or No?

I got 3 x Panasonic C2.5kW H3.2kW Reverse Cycle Split System installed 12 months ago.
Just wondering do people get their systems serviced every year?
Got quoted $350 to have all 3 serviced.
I do clean the filters monthly myself.
Lightly used, mostly for heating through the winter.

Cheers

We use our aircons every single day.

Yeah the filters from my units are easy to pop out and wash.

No, there is no need to service your aircon except for cleaning your own filters. Don't also fall for needing to "re-gas" your system.

    • that's what i though but the company that installed called me up to book in the service.
They started comparing it to a car service and said it's very important….

Naturally so, as they'd like more of your $.

Don't forget the germs, viruses, and other nasties…. :)

this, I booked an annual service the other year there because it felt like it wasn't heating as quickly before, they came and cleaned the filters (which were already clean) for about 10 minutes and left. Apart from cleaning the filters which you can do yourself it's a big waste of $$

I can't even think what they could do that you wouldn't do yourself.

I'd only get a service if the performance drops off. Otherwise it's pretty basic to keep the unit in good order.

      good info, thanks mate

    • Your air conditioning system should be professionally serviced regularly – the service person will check the refrigerant gas levels, test the thermostat and make sure all the internals are in good condition. This will keep the unit running for many years.

Some manufacturers recommend the air conditioner should be serviced once a year. Others say that as long as you follow the instructions and regularly clean the filters and units, you'll only need to have the air conditioner serviced if a fault develops.

That is a one controducting article, what is the difference between regularly and annually?
I would suggest only service them if it's not performing well.
But clean the filters at least each season.

  • Some companies offer extended warranty if you get it serviced at least once a year. I know Brivis does this

  • As a matter of interest what did your units cost to install. Looking for ballparks as we are thinking of getting one. I realise it is a bit “piece of string”.

    • mine was a standard back to back install
cost $500 each unit to install

      • Thanks for the info. I’m looking at solar plus reverse air conditioning. Solar is becoming the unit you want vs the unit you want to pay for. :)

  • In Singapore (and other tropical countries), servicing the air conditioning is a condition of leasing.

I believe they just clean out the filters on the internal unit, they might do a foam clean of the fins on the internal unit and check the external unit for leaks. Tracing the leak, repairing and re-gassing is additional.

I'd say it's about 1 hour per split air con unit work (assuming they're thorough). The cost (in my mind) should be $50-100 and possibly a discount for multiple units.

We use our split air-cons all Summer and get them cleaned and serviced around every 18 months - 2yrs. When they do a proper clean, they attach a big bib looking thing to catch the water then clean the fins and drum with a high power jet of water. It gets rid of all the dust/dirt/ mould that builds up with use inside the unit especially in Summer. Just shine a torch up inside the unit on the drum and if it's thick with crap enough to impede the airflow then it's probably time for a good clean. You can also buy a great DIY foam called MIZU foam to use in between professional cleans. If you've only used it lightly for 12 months, I reckon you could leave it another 12 months at least before getting it cleaned and serviced professionally.

Apart from cleaning the filters, there shouldn't be any servicing required unless there's a leak that's causing refrigerant loss or a blockage. If you know what to look for (there are many guides online) you can detect leaks yourself, keep an eye on electricity usage, notice any abnormal noise (hissing) or smell, monitor cooling efficiency.

I’m guessing the one person who voted yes does this for a living.
