Just Got NBN Activated. Sharing My Experience

Just had my NBN connection activated today and sharing my experience so far in dealing with RSP and NBN Co. Feel free to ask me questions.

Timeline:

22/08/19 Ordered 50/20 NBN connection from Tangerine. Done with ease.

23/08/19 Got a text message to confirm an NBN approved tech would be onsite on 29/08/19 between 8am to 12pm to perform the installation.

29/08/19 NBN Co sent installation tech to connect everything up in the morning. The tech texted the previous eveving to confirm next day 8am arrival, and he arrived on time. the whole installation process took about 2 hours to complete. However by the time the tech left around 11:15am, no line syc. No internet. He said to wait for the line sync with all for LEDs on the NTD becoming solid green then call him so he would come around and perform the activation.

Received a text message from the tech while I was out around 11:40am saying he has left another NTD on my door step and asking me to swap out the original NTD he had installed earlier. Did the swap out around 1pm. Still no line sync. By 3pm the tech said to call the RSP and Tangerine lodged a case with NBN Co.

30/08/19 An appointment was setup and confirmed for a NBN Co tech by RSP to come out on 03/09/19 between 8am to 12pm to troubleshoot.

02/09/19 Received a text reminder for the upcoming appointment.

03/09/19 The NBN Co tech arrived around 9:30am and started the troubleshoot. Within a minute he found an issue with the isolator being non-functional and replaced it. However 10 minutes later there was still no line sync with the NTD. I then mentioned to him about the situation with the two NTDs from the installation, and he straighaway shook his head and starting to call NBN Co to find out which NTD was registered for activation. 3 minutes later he turned around and said that none was registered and activated.

The tech went to his van and grabbed a new NTD and provisioned that over the phone, and 10 minutes later we got line sync. It tool another 20 minutes for the unit to be fully activated and ready to go.

What I have learned from the whole experience.

The whole installation and activation process are all handled by NBN Co. Your RSP only lodges the initial request.

The techs sent by NBN Co for installation and troubleshooting are different level techs. The installation tech is only level 1 tech and has no experience when comes to troubleshooting. The sencond tech was highly experience and knew extacly what to look for and what to do to remedy the situation. He is the guy I want to have on my team at work being a network engineer myself.

In dealing with NBN situation, you have to know what to tell them. Like I told them there was never a line sync to begin with, and that I suspect the NTD never was properly provisioned. That definitely helped to cut down the troubleshooting process.

My new Tangerine NBN 50/20 connection on HFC is up and runnung now and I have done 3 speed tests so far. These were done between 11am and 12:30pm.

  • your 3.5 years behind, its done and dusted.

Considering my area still has no NBN hes still early for me

Then I got some news for you; When more and more ppl in your area start connecting to NBN, it will get slower ;)

        • I live in a new estate with only NBN FTTP (no copper cable options). It's been over 6 years now and I didn't experience any slow down in speeds. I'm on Internode 50/20 and my speeds are around 46 down and 17-18 up.

          • @trex: Just consider yourself lucky, I'm on NBN FTTP as well. I had FTTP few years before NBN started, used to be fast.
But if I need good connection now, I need to pay extra and go for AB or something. Which I dont need at the moment.

            • @boomramada: What do you mean FTTP before NBN started? Wasn't FTTP rolled out from NBN?

Speed issues can be caused by ISP, equipment, cabling etc. Which ISP are you with?

              • @trex: FTTP, fibre to the premises ?? was introduced like 7+ years in ACT, we never had a cooper line. Then iiNet bought our provider during the NBN rollout. Since then my connection went down hill. That was iiNet excuse when I complaint about slow speed ( equipment/ cabling etc), I'm like , excuse me, my connection was fine before you came to my neighbourhood, then they say it's due to conjection Lol
Although if you with AB, they got no issues.

                • @boomramada: Interesting, I didn't know that FTTP was introduced in ACT before NBN. Internode is owned by iiNet and I have got no issues with them at all. Maybe the pre-NBN FTTP equipment might be outdated or not fully compatible with NBN. If AB offers faster speeds and pricing is the same, why don't just move over?

                  • @trex: It's nothing to do with equipments, its bandwidth congestion and only happen during the peak events. Well I don't use internet as much as I used to and IInet still slightly cheaper but eventually I will.

    • I've been delaying it for as long as I could because of all the horror stories about NBN. At the end of the day it's all about luck on what you get as the end result on NBN. Time will tell if all is good or not.

      • Yeah although it might just be my luck or an actual thing, but I am 3/3 on all new connections I have taken out on a 12m contract. After about 6 months the speeds seem to drastically drop off. It is like they give you the premium connection on startup then get shooed off to the pleb stuff after.

        • For this precise reason I opted not to be on contract and chose month-to-month. If the RSP is not up to scratch then move on to a new one next month.

      • Well you fell for the fake news and listened to the 1% of complainers, i cant say anything bad about it at all, FTTH 100/40 for 3.5 years hasn't missed a beat, except for a few outages from cut cables. Thanks Labour not that i would ever vote for them, my install was the night before they got outed March 16 lol.

  • My experience:
Signed up with myrepublic on 3/8/19 for HFC NBN100
16/8/19 NBNco technician came out and said we're not wired to the street, need someone to wire from the splitter to the pit to our house
29/8/19 2nd NBNco tech came out and said the same, not sure why last guy booked another tech instead of the team that runs the HFC cabling from the splitter
2/9/19 NBNco came and wired up as above to the front of the house; replaced our telstra box on the wall with an NBN one

Now we're waiting on another NBN tech to come out on 27/9/19 to do the internal wiring (if it's even required) and give us the damn HFC modem

Australian's are still going along with the deregulation lunacy, because they're brainwashed, so that they can have high priced, poor service level internet that is severely damaging the entire economy.

They're so braindead that the Telstra CEO goes onto mainstream media and blames NBN for high prices, instead of the pointless middleman Telstra, that is adding costs so that it's shareholders and CEO make a profit.

  • The first nbn tech basically didnt do their job, after not being able to figure out the issue, they gave up and left. He is a contractor, so doubt he even got paid for that callout.

When the connection is active, they have to take a photo of the NTD with the correct lights or they dont get paid.

When i got the nbn installed, the initial tech did everything including troubleshooting to get it installed, apparently there was 1 issue inside the building, and 2 in the pit, but he got it up and running in 2-3 hours. I very much doubt your initial nbn tech was any less qualified than the 2nd one, they just didnt go through all the steps required to get you connected.

      I love these forums

Nothing like people talking about work i do everyday with absolutely no clue.

      hahahahahahaha

Why not provide some details then? Educate the people !

    • I don't know whether you are right or not, but according to my RSP the installation tech and troubleshooting tech that NBN Co sends out are on different levels.

      • You may still be right, maybe the 1st tech i got is also a higher level than the 1st one you got, the one i got looked like he knew what he was doing, he walked me through it step by step, and fixed all the issues as needed. Maybe you were unlucky and got someone new or inexperienced for that 1st install.

  • "The techs sent by NBN Co for installation and troubleshooting are different level techs"

Thats a new one, never heard that before. We have different level skill sets for ADSL back in the days, but since NBN was created i have never ever heard of that one.

    • If that's the case then NBN Co should really rethink who they send out as the first tech was really really bad at his job as he didn't do much troubleshooting at all, or at least he didn't bothered. This is why so much negativity surrounds NBN in general. I certainly wouldn't want this tech on my team.

  • Just wanted to say thanks. About to finally get NBN and couldn't find basic info about this (not even who does the installation or whether there even needs to be one - the HFC port is there, it was telstra cable before).

Appreciate getting some basic details and how long the delays might be.

  • Just an update folks.

It's been 2 full weeks in with Tangerine and so far I'm impressed. No dropouts, not much peak hour slow down.
