  • Aussie farmers should get more than this for the effort :-{

    • +4

it's probably mostly backpackers picking them…

      so no.

      • Yeah but the farmers would pass on the profits to the workers [sarcasm detected].

        $60 in 8 hours…

        • -8

Lol as if sbs is a reliable source…

    • How many of the pickers do you think would be underpaid backpackers?

      Edit: too slow :-(

      • +2

A minority are backpackers. They're mostly all asians on work visas that get less than minimum wage due to being paid on piece rates.

From what I've seen the planters, pickers and staff that pack the punnets get piece rate. While the ones loading the punnets in to boxes and on pallets (Usually aussies) get an hourly rate.

Info taken from observations at Coco's farms around Elimbah QLD.

          • @kahn: They can have the picking job, I don't want it :D

            • -1

@Spellbound: You would probably want it if they paid you $30 an hour.
It is a part of the problem why our economy and wages are going down the toilet.
If we didn't have cheap third-world labour coming in, the farmers would be forced to increase the hourly rate for picking until some local aussie decidedes it's worth his/her time. Be it $20 or $30 an hour, whatever will make a local work.
Now there's no point to hire a local, since you can hire a backpacker who will work for scraps and will never complain because they have no work protection rights and if they do complain, they will lose their job.
Wouldn't care if I had to pay $20 per kilo if it meant proper wages for aussies, but as long as these tourists are allowed to be employed without punishing the dodgy employers, I say $0.99 is all they are going to get and I won't feel sorry for it.

              • @Blue Cat: I'd actually prefer lower wages if the cost of living was also lower.
Maybe the manufacturing and helpdesk industries would return to Aus and solve the unemployment problem in this country.

  • This is the price at my local fruit and veg!

  • $1.29 in Victoria?

    • Has anyone confirmed this price for Victoria?

    • $1.29 for me in Melbourne

  • So why do the same strawberries cost different each state?

  • Use the savings to buy some jars and treat yourself to homemade jam. Much nicer than store-bought!

    • +2

Thanks for the tip, bought some homemade jams.

I figured I would end up with empty jars after I finished the jam, so I skipped the step of buying empty jars.

You're welcome! Check out my reply to the last post about cheap strawberries for some recipe ideas.

      • We sell jams at the club ;)

        • They sell Jam at clubs now? I always thought kids were into drugs and alcohol, but this is a refreshing change.

  • 79 cents at spud shed in WA.

  • I avoid aldi fruit and veg like the plague.

They had that campaign about how their fruit and veg got better and it was full of shit. Still had stuff like apples and oranges go off after a couple of days.

    • Bought some tasteless strawberries from them last week.

  • 1.49 in WA Aldi this week.

  • Just checked in NSW, it’s $1.49 (Oxford St, Surry Hills)

    $1.49 Aldi Toukley, $1 at Coles Toukley…thx OP….will still enjoy 'em :)

  • Canberra Centre, ACT is $1.49

  • I've consumed too many strawberry's this week.

  • The ones I got from Also today we're those one-third white and tasteless variety. The same QLD brand from Harris Farm for $1.33 (but in a cube box) was much sweeter and tastier, but has a shorter lifespan.
