can anyone recommend a good place to purchase clothing suitable for hiking / kayaking. lightweight and waterproof would be ideal. the old target jeans and t-shirt is not really suitable. all the main outdoor stores have good stuff but it's at premium prices.

The North Face, Patagonia, et al are worthwhile when you're looking at more technical, serious gear, but for lightweight, quick drying active clothing it's pretty hard to beat those two.

Avoid Kathmandu. Their staff discount is 75% which should give some idea of their markup.
Lots of traditional outdoorsy brands like North Face, Patagonia and Fjallraven are becoming premium 'lifestyle brands' and their prices reflect it.
Macpac and Anaconda are still okay. But I've also been impressed with Decathlon's quality given the price range.
