[AMA] I Used to Work at Hungry Jack's

Hey guys,

Didn't see any AMAs in regards to Hungry Jack's so I thought I might contribute. I was there for around 3 years, did leave a little while back so I may not be up to date with newish burgers or promos. Worked mainly in the kitchen area but did touch a little on front counter/drive thru.

EDIT: I am at work so I may be slow on the replies.

Never tried the coffee tbh, I have that Asian lactose weakness. More choice is always good I guess!

    Biggest order you've done?

    • +7

The infamous "Samoan Rush". Always fun when you see a lone Tarago slowly roll into the drive thru. To answer your question, it was 50 double whopper meals and we had to put all the other orders on hold.

      • +1

I hate those too lol. That's actually insane, my biggest is only 40 cheesy cheeseburgers.

      • Vouchers? How does one afford this?

      • +1

I have a friend who was at Maccas and had a Samoan Rush where a tarago with 8 bros in it ordered two dinner boxes each (circa 2013).

I've worked out the mathematics of that in class with students as its a real world story.

I hope there is a few more similar stories

        • +1

I'm sure every fast food employee has some sort of variant of this story hahaha.

  • +2

ever dropped a flame grilled patty and put it back on the bbq?

    • -4

i used to work at hj back in the day too. yeah we dropped a wrap with 100% of its surface in contact with the ground, picked it up and kept using it for the chicken wrap.

      • +3

Gross, i hope you get a permanent feeling of a pebble stuck in your shoe.

        • -6

cool story, i don't care and neither did my friend with me. hope you feel better

          • -1

@waterbottled: Yeah, if they wanted food that wasn't dropped on the ground, they shouldn't have gone to Hungry Jacks.

          • +3

            @waterbottled: You're a piece of work.

            • +3

@josh676: Don't worry just the fact that they were compelled to reply meant they actually care more than they think. Life will catch up with them one day.

              • -5

@Meeb: It took 2 seconds for me to reply. Means nothing.

    • Never done that myself, no. The "BBQ" we use for the meat is a broiler which gets put on something like a conveyor belt at a speed to cook the patties at a specific rate. I believe they've changed that now to a chute + timer now for other patties. So if I were to put it back on the BBQ, it'd probably turn into a really dry black piece of meat.

  • is the meat patties actually flame grilled?

why they replace voucher with app voucher? not enough profit?

    • +1

yeah they are. they have a broiler with actual flames grilling the frozen patties, and the fall down through a chute at the back and into a pan soaked with oil.

      1. Yeah, the other reply covered it pretty well.
      2. I'm not sure on that, I guess they wanted to push more people to use their mobile app?
  • Ten years ago the Grilled Chicken used to taste a lot better than now. What makes them taste good back then, and what ingredients or technique to make them taste better? I remember it used to be my favourite burger at HJ’s, It’s not worth buying anymore :(

    • +1

Most likely it would've been the sauce it's marinated in. We have to follow a timer so after x amount of time the patty is sitting waiting to go into a burger, it needs to get thrown away. Grilled chickens had a bad reputation of getting dried out really quickly.

  • Why do they sell the Angry Onion Rings only, i preferred the Crumbed Onion Rings.

  • In your experience, what % of customers used a code/promo and didnt pay full price?

    • +1

In my store it was around 1 in 5 that had a voucher. But that was a small sample size, I didn't work in the front for too long.

  • +2

Do you hate the people who use the app to grab a freebie on the way to work regularly? (coffee/hash brown etc.?)

    • +5

Nope, I do it myself as well! You'll find a lot of the regular workers don't really care, it's mostly the management that might turn their nose up a bit. But yeah, we didn't get paid enough to care.

Is there some sort of rule for AMA posts, that the OP is expected to respond to questions within a defined timeframe?

    • +4

No, you are thinking of an AMAAIWRTQWADT.

    • I guess within a day or less if you happen to be shown online…..or else why bother posting an AMA if you're not gonna answer at all?

  • +1

    Are the burgers really better?

    • +2

Price and value wise yes, but I prefer Oportos taste wise. I try to avoid HJs because I've just gotten sick of it as you can imagine working there for a few years…

      • +1

I have to admit I'm always craving HJs since there aren't any near me, and whilst I know there are delivery services, it's no fun if it's not piping hot.

The adds are so effective at making me want a flame grilled burger!

  • I see that you have a microwave in your kitchen. When and what did you use it for?
I don't like my burgers to be hot and fresh from microwave.

    • +2

I'll answer your question with a bit more in-depth information, here's the protocol we make for making your average whopper:
      * Toast the buns on some high heat metal that slides through (other employees can correct me on this, I don't remember the actual name) which is done in a few seconds.
      * Use tongs to grab the 5 inch meat patty and pop it on the bottom bun. We then microwave that side for a few seconds. Maybe to make it feel like it's hot and fresh out of the grill?
      * While we wait for that to microwave, experienced employees would've finished applying the mayo, lettuce and tomato on.
      * Take the bottom part of the whopper off, add pickles, ketchup then onion.
      * Send it packing to the front to deal with

      • So they DO microwave the patty's, but after they are flame grilled.

I read your reply earlier and thought nah.. there's gotta be some microwaving, the burger has the sloppy post-microwave taste/feel.

        • Yeah hahaha, just post flame-grilled funnily enough. The patty sitting in the heated pan after probably doesn't help keeping it juiced up.

  • Do older people (25-40) ever get hired for entry level roles? Not Management…

    • +1

Not at the 2 stores I've worked at. You'll notice it's mostly younger employees just because they don't have to pay them as much. I was making around $11/hr when I first started.

I went to maccas the other day, the lady serving was wearing a burqua but it was really dirty and I couldn't eat there …
Went down the road to HJ's and another muslim lady was serving, but she had a nice, clean burqua on …

The Burqua's are better at Hungry Jacks …

    • +3

This was probably the equivalent of retail workers hearing the "No price tag? I guess it's free then!" joke.

  • Why is it so cold, is it deliberate? As it deters me from going, unless i really have too.

    • Probably for us in the kitchen, it gets hot af back there.

  • Of all the menu, what do you recommend the as the best ?

    • +1

If I could go back in time to when we used to use the spicy sauce dip for burgers… It'd have to be an angry whopper, extra mayo and add bacon. Haven't tried the new grill masters range much so I can't comment on those, I just remember they were annoying to make (Fragile brioche buns while having managers berate you to get the orders out on time). It depends on my mood (The extra condiments would go by preference):
      - If I'm feeling fancy, starving and wanna spend more money: Ultimate whopper with extra mayo.
      - Moderately priced meal but still hungry: Whopper with cheese or a Bacon deluxe
      - Not too shabby on eating and okay on price: Hashbrown cheeseburger/Rodeo cheeseburger

I tend to avoid the eggs because the way we make it is that we mix it with water as well, so it ends up being pretty plain. Fun fact: The extra condiments such as salads and sauce used to be free and not a lot of people knew about it. On one of my older comments on my profile I mentioned I had a customer that ordered extra mayo x10 on her burger. Me and the guys at the back thought that was an error but the front counter confirmed it wasn't. We weren't even sure how much to put on so we did a few trial and error runs and it got to the point when the burger had a thick layer of mayo, probably about 3-5cm in width on BOTH sides of her burger. No idea how anyone could enjoy that.

  • What can you win on the shake and win app?

    • Too many good and drink items for me to remember unfortunately. If I still had access to the staff portal I might've been able to tell you.
