Found Powerball Ticket on The Floor of The Place I Work and It Is a Winning Ticket

Hi guys,

I found a powerball ticket on the floor at work. I was excited and told my boss and my co-workers. Then, we checked the ticket.

It was a winning ticket. it won $10.55 to be exact. My boss said I should leave a note to find the owner of the ticket first, then she said if I want to claim. I should donate the winning money. My co-workers think I should go claim it.

$10.55 is not a lot for my boss but I could do something with it hence I am on Ozbargain. I was jokingly saying that we'll be having different conversation if it won $80 millions.

The person spent $43 something for that ticket. What should you do if you found something like that?

If I were to claim the winning money, would I get in trouble as i did not buy that ticket?

UPDATE : I HAVE LEFT A NOTE SAYING THAT WE FOUND THE WINNING TICKETS AND WE WILL GIVE IT BACK TO THE OWNER IF THEY CAN PROVIDE TIME OF PURCHASE AND STORE NAME.
THANKS GUYS. I DID NOT KNOW SO MANY WANT ME TO RETURN THE TICKET.

  • Is it linked to a membership account?

Can you tell me how to see it?
It looks like normal ticket by the looks of it.

It doesn't say anything about membership on the ticket

      • you can't tell from the ticket if it's linked to a membership.

if it is it can be claimed by the rightful owner.

people have been caught out in the past so be careful

Raffle it off, $2 per entry. Use the proceeds to buy more lottery tickets. Profit(?)

I am thinking of buying another ticket with that winning money.

I think I would find hard enough if I care about that ticket.

It looks like the person does not care for it at all.

Even whoever won with that ticket still lost money. Why would you want to buy into that?

    • Brilliant.

  • Reinvest the winnings in another lotto ticket and if you win big share it with everyone at work

    • I was kind of thinking the same thing

    • Who knows, it could happen, do it :D

  • So the odds of you winning were about the same and you didn’t even buy a ticket!

    • I don't understand this logic. Lottery is like gambling. Sometimes you lose and sometimes you win. Most of the time you lost.

OzBargain points for checking a discarded ticket.

  • I'd personally give it some time and wait until the person who bought it speaks up. If no one claims it then keep it.

    • I have put a note saying. The owner of the ticket cna have it if they can tell me the time and place of where the owner purchased. But how long do I wait though?

      • A week maybe. Its not your responsibility. Its only $10 too.

  • I found a $10 note in the note feed of a pokie machine a few months ago. Nobody else around so just handed it in to the staff.

    • May I ask you? What do you feel if the staff took it?

  • if my boss suggested I do all those things I'd hand it to them and say "fill your boots"

  • What OP found is the equivalent of finding a $10 note on the floor.
Just do the same as you would if that happened. If it were my office, if noone claims it, just buy some cakes / donuts or whatever and leave them for everyone to share.

The ticket is not worth $43.

A $10 note would be better imho. No need to go to a retail outlet to claim your winnings. That one extra step is why I would give the ticket to someone else. My time is worth more than $10.55.

Wow really OP you had to make a thread on this?

It is $10. Just send an email out and give it back.

  • Stop going to work, hide from your coworkers and live the high life with the winnings.

…or realise it's $10.55. Send a group email out. If no one responds just buy a cake or something for the tea room….

  • Call Current Affair. They live and breathe this situation.

  • Your actions reminded me of my son, who found $2 in a store and asked me if he could keep it.

I told him to ask the shopkeeper which he did and the shopkeeper was nice to say he can keep it.

The next thing he asked me was, hey dad can I keep the money if I can find more money in the shop…..I replied sure as you got the shopkeeper approval.

Lmao the next 15m was like a treasure hunt for him.

So, sonny, you have the ozbargainers and your boss's approval now the questions is do you feel lucky?
If yes its time to hit the casinos.

  • 75% plus loss = winning ticket?

    • It's some sort of gambling. The more you lose if you think you have more chance of winning

  • I'll give you $5.00 for the ticket. You buy the stamp and envelope to send it to me.

  • I just got paid
    I'm broke, but I'm ballin'
    Don't know where we're goin'
We go in when we go out
    I just got paid

And it feels like every day's a holiday
So I can take my ticket to the shop
And I know, know, know I should be worried
But I work, work, work to the bone, baby
    So gimme that
Gimme that, gimme that, gimme that (woo)
Gimme that, gimme that, gimme that (hey)
    Gimme that money
    I just got paid

    😊
