What Should I Be Looking for in a Budget Gaming Monitor?

So I'm looking to purchase a gaming monitor for my desktop arriving soon (been out of the PC gaming loop for a while) it'll have an R5-3600 and RTX 2080S.
I thought a system like that could run 4K but I guess my idea of 4K has been wrong after I researched a bit. I'm guessing the best I could do without having a bad time fps wise is 1440p?

Now what I'm having a hard time figuring out is G-Sync/FreeSync necessary and 144HZ?

Sorry if I'm being a total noob :(

  • what game do you play ?

    • I'll most likely be playing league, destiny, most battle royales and cyberpunk when it's out.

  • 1080p/144hz or 240hz up to 27" max
    or
    1440p144hz

I wouldn't even consider 4k monitors unless you have a couple thousand for the 4k/144hz ones.

    • So 1440p 144hz is the sweet spot? Does refresh rate matter?

      • Yes absolutely. And make sure it is gsync sync compatible (Nvidia certified gsync). Or known to be compatible with Nvidia cards. No point paying for actual gsync with Nvidia having freesync compatibility now.

Rtx 2080 I would definitely get 1440p 1080p is wasted on a 2080. 4k is still too intensive to achieve 144hz.

        Definitely at least 120hz.
Absolutely freesync/gsync no matter what else you choose.

Adaptivesync tech is the biggest advancement in gaming monitors since the transition to lcd.

        • Thanks I'll be on the lookout :)

      • "Does refresh rate matter?"
Ofc it does more so than resolution.

It really depends on the games you play, if you play fast paced games the most then 1080p/240hz would be best otherwise 1440p/144hz

anything lower than 100hz shouldn't even be considered, 144hz and up is best.

it's one of those things that not everyone can tell the difference initially cause they are unaware of how to tell but if they even try and go back a lower hz they can easily tell the difference.

        • I was considering the Kogan ultra wide monitor but that has 100hz that's why I wanted to know if the 100hz vs 144hz would be important.

          • @senpai: I'm personally hanging out for that Kogan ultrawide, but as I'm focused purely on singleplayer/story games I don't need a high refresh rate.

Still, 60hz to 100hz would be a big jump up for me! As long as my little 1050Ti can keep up…

    • I have 4k monitor at 60hz and it looks great, even though it was just the cheapest one they had at the time at officeworks. 1080p just looks bad at that size, but 1080p upscaled is okay it has a soft look to it. 4K overlays over a 1080p game is nice, razor sharp HUD and icons and stuff plus the game still looks and runs smooth. A giant 4k monitor right in your face is better than two 1080p monitors. It's quievelent of 4 1080p monitors a quarter the size I guess.

      • 60hz looks like a slideshow it looks and feels terrible i can NEVER go back.

  • Depends on your budget really ?

If you have less than $500, go for a 1080p gaming screen, if $700-800 go for a 1440p gaming screen. If more than $1000 go for a 2k gaming screen, 3-4k go for a 4k gaming screen.
