Kogan NBN Users. Have Your Say

I'm currently on Superloop and noticed some fellow Ozbargainers stating that Kogan NBN is pretty good.

Anyone here on Kogan NBN happy to share your experience?
Speeds, evening speeds, ping to SG servers (Steam) etc?

Much appreciated.

Have you heard of a website called Whirlpool?

    Kogan/Vodafone NBN (HFC) issues
    Kogan Internet now available

Doesn't hurt to discuss on OZB

It hurts even less to search for information that's already available on Whirlpool rather than asking people to repeat themselves here. Just keep in mind that you're likely to see a greater proportion of complaints on Whirlpool so it's not a great barometer of ISP performance. It ain't called Whingepool for nothing :-)

routing issues appear to be fixed…

i had routing issues with TPG that lasted months.. (profanity) i hated TPG

I think you should stick with Superloop if you are conscious about speeds and good pings for games. I know Superloop and Aussie Broadband to be the popular providers with good service and speeds. Its up to you whether you want to switch.

  • "ping to SG servers (Steam)"

Whats the IP i can run a ping test in cmd if you like.

    • ping sgp-2.valve.net

  • I used it for under a month.

Their modem could never connect, they told me it was a firmware issue and they were upgrading their servers, which when happened still couldn't connect.

And I got drop outs all the time. in WA on Hilton exchange.

Switched to Superloop, don't waste your time.

Does kogan not offer a nbn phone service? theres no mention of anything about phone here https://www.koganinternet.com.au/

    • No phone, but neither does Vodafone NBN.

  • Have been with them for about a month. 25/5 HFC connection in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. Speed test around 20ish/5 most times of day, even peak. Had one very brief dropout (less than a couple of hours), that's it. Using Google's public DNS, no noticeable page load issues.

  • I did a whole bunch of speedtests sometime last month using Kogan NBN.

    https://pastebin.com/0EkKKDEq

All values are wrt to Hong Kong time, as I have that defaulted on my laptop. Basically 2 hours behind Sydney time.

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/36rmpqr3?p=8

Sadly so far no one has put any other speed tests up, but basically I wrote a script to automate it using python on a linux system. I'm guessing the speeds might not be too good for Superloop or Aussie Broadband either, bar a few locations such as Singapore where they have a direct route. From the small research I've done the international speeds on all carriers are relatively poor because it's Australia. I don't know if that is the reason why no one else has the guts to put out the real speed tests or it was too complicated.

Anyway, currently using Kogan NBN as a VPN connection. The dynamic ip is quite annoying at times. I noticed a few issues like the connection clearing out randomly in the fritzbox, but I think that is because the ip address was being renewed. I'm currently in Hong Kong, but the speeds aren't impressive at all, basically around 12mbps max from Hong Kong, enough to watch iview and do stuff.

Also heard PIA VPN was starting to be blocked in Hong Kong. Geee. I thought it was fake because there was no emergency announcement yet, but I can't really confirm it myself as I don't use PIA. I posted something similar warning of it happening soon, but I think I stepped over the line and it was censored on Whirlpool after a few days. I'm basically going to stay away from Whirlpool because it's pretty pointless doing volunteer work over there that isn't appreciated, including the speed test thread (It's like it went cold after I posted some call for transparency). Apparently they moved the HK protest discussion to In The News but new users cannot access that area, but I will stick with my word and not post on their anymore as mentioned in the now deleted post. (Not surprised the OP is looking for more opinions on Kogan NBN outside of Whirlpool, in light of this)

    Anyway, Peace.
