E-Waste Recycling Sites For Public

So I watched this YouTube video where a local YouTuber picks up an Apple Mac from the e-waste dumpster. I'm a tech enthusiast and love fixing up old computers and using them around the house.

Are e-waste recycling sites available for public access like the wreckers? Got links where I could check for sites around my area?

  • I've used them to drop things off. No one cares what you do (not at least the closest one to me), so you can have a bit of a rummage around and pick up what you want and then leave.

  • I noticed a large pile of old computers, monitors and graphics cards outside an Officeworks last time I visited one.

    • +4

inside too last time I went

    • Only some recycle, but good point.

    • Can one access Officeworks recycling to search for parts?

      • Officeworks uses TechCollect for their ewaste. Technically, once something is dropped off at a TechCollect site it becomes property of TechCollect

Source: work in local gov and we use tech collect.

Advice: make friends with the store manager or be sneaky

        • Other option would then be to stand outside and wait till someone drops of something, talk to them and get it 😂

  • I am trying to find someone that strips computers for gold content,i have over 200 motherboards and hundreds of leads plus lots more in canberra or goulburn txt 0415102899

    • I can take the leads but it would have to be a quantity to make the trip from Sydney and the processing (you have to cut all the connections off) worth my while.

I don't really do the boards as I have nowhere to store them to get enough quantity (there's only 1 buyer in Sydney and I've never used them) but I'll ask around.

PM me with a quantity of the cables. How many 240L wheelie bins would they fill?

      PM me

    • wow stripping for gold sounds like a lot of work

  • Only have about a 45lt bin full.

It is hard to extract the gold.but having fun stripping down the computers

  • I am wondering about it too. Where do the resellers get all these used business computers? Surely businesses won't dump their retired computers at public collection site for public access.

    • I have seen a mountain of Dells dumped in the Bunnings electronic skip just yesterday.

      • You reckon we could go pick em up for free?

        • I picked up 2 WD 1tb 3.5" hdds. I don't know if they work, I assume I'll have to buy an enclosure or deck to know that

          • @Laziofogna: whoa, gold mine.

            • @lightfoot: Lol, I really hope to find a laptop in the bin next time to convert to chromebook

              • @Laziofogna: As per my original post, this one dude found a working 27" iMac. I'm like, why did anyone not tell me this. haha

  • Still trying to sell about 150 mother boards, 64 x ram cards, leads, d-link items, i have all so stripped about 15 computers so have heaps of spare parts, i cant itemize every thing,,it would be worth about $2500
