I'm a pretty frequent traveller who stays around 90 days every year in 4- and 5-star hotels all over the world. I've also been a (free) Club 1 Hotel member for over 3 years now but I've never managed to find a rate through them that was actually the cheapest even though I search them (along with a whole host of other sites) at almost every destination. Not to say their rates are bad — they're often cheaper than are available on public facing sites — but usually I can get a cheaper rate with a coupon elsewhere (e.g. 16-20% off at Cheaptickets), stacking coupons and cashback and secret deals (e.g. Agoda), claiming a Best Rate Guarantee at a major chain, booking directly with the hotel, though other private booking sites (e.g. LMTClub) etc.

The one and only time I placed a booking through Club 1 Hotels, it was cancelled with an apology email saying that the room I had booked was "unavailable" — something that hardly inspires confidence.

    YMMV. :)

Staying that many days a year I wouldn't have thought you would be interested in this because you don't earn points or get status credits with this. I suppose it depends where you are and what groups you have status with.

I mostly gave up chasing hotel status and points a few years ago, because of successive devaluations making them less lucrative, poor recognition of even top tier status, and because I'm really bored of chain hotels in general and their "sameness". There's also something liberating about being free to select the most beautiful/characterful/well designed/best located/best value hotel (or Airbnb) for any given place rather than feeling compelled to stay in a chain just because I have status.

That said, redeeming points can still make lots of sense at certain times and I still have enough freebie statuses (e.g. Hilton Gold trhough a credit card, corporate status with Mariott Bonvoy etc.) that staying at a chain isn't always bad. :)

          I hear ya :)
Some places I always like to go back to, like Pan Pacific in Singapore and many Shangri-La properties.

You can stay at the New York Palace, The Dedica Anthology in Budapest using Marriott points. It is an amazing place. Also the Ritz Carlton there where I stayed in the Club but do not recommend.
