TRS Refund for Item Bought with Gift Card

Hi everyone,

I'm looking buying a phone from JB HIFI and using gift card to buy the item.
I presume I'll still get a receipt with GST on it.
Will I still be able to claim GST when going overseas? As in the past I've had it refunded to a credit card that was used to buy the item…

Thanks!

  • What happens if you pay cash?
You can opt to get it deposited in a nominated bank account.

  • No problems with that. I have done the same and had the refund amount deposited into my bank account.

  • Can confirm you will be able to claim TRS as long as there's a GST component on the invoice.
You can get it paid into any debit/credit account, just not cash.
Other Ts & Cs applies obviously (e.g. name & address on $1000+ invoices).

  • thanks guys!

  • I think things have changed - TRS refund is only for items left overseas.
If you bring it back you will be charged the GST and this will now be enforced?

    • +2

This has always been the case.
You're supposed to declare them when you bring them back, keeping in mind:
      * You're allowed $900 worth of duty-free goods, and
      * You can argue that the $1000+ laptop/phone/camera that you've claimed GST on is now used/secondhand and is worth less than $900

Unless you've claimed TRS on a 15k diamond ring (which you'd be best to either declare or not get caught wearing it on the way in), I wouldn't stress too much otherwise.

    • Trade-in the iPhone for another iPhone while overseas. Bring the used one back and pay no GST.

  • payment method doesn't matter
