Wireless PC Controller

Getting into fighting games recently got Tekken 7 so need a controller.

The xbox one wireless controller was my first choice but can't find it below $55.

Looking at a xfx wireless controller from gumtree for $15 + $15 delivery.

Best one so far unless I take a chance on some Chinese ones from ebay for $12.50 - $18.

Will be using it on a pc with only WiFi n.

I have a steam controller but honestly might sell it as I can't find a use for it.

So yeah any good specials or recommendations for a wireless pc controller for mainly fighting games maybe also try on some shooters to break the monotony.

Budget would probably be $70 max (this is the total that includes shipping) otherwise I'll just wait for the next deal on a dualshock or xbox one wireless controller.

Thanks ozbargain.

  • Last I checked $55 < $70
    Google, "ps4 controller on pc"

    • Only said $70 in case there is some really good pc wireless controller with like extra macro programmable buttons or cool feature in that price range.

I saw the ebay plus deal but sadly I do not have ebay plus.

  • You can get the Xbox One Controller for $56 if you have eBay Plus

    • Don't have ebay plus unfortunately.

Wireless controllers don't use wifi, they use Bluetooth. You'll need an adapter if you don't have it already.

    • Some controllers have a wireless dongle but most use BT. A bluetooth usb dongle probably costs less than $5.

      • +1

wireless yes, but don't think its WiFi, more like RF.
I have used both PS3/PS4 and XboX with Raspberry PI with bluetooth connection.

        • Definitely not wi-fi. The latency would likely be too high for controllers.

        • Out of all the controllers you have tried which is the most plug and play easy to setup.

I remember dual shock 3 being difficult to use on a Windows system needing extra steps to get it working is this still true for the PS4?

          • @AlienC: Took while to setup PS4 controller in Pi, but that was year ago. It would be better supported by now. Rest are easy. But I never used them in PC.
Edit: Google says it can, as long as you got applicable BT support, don't just buy a cheap BT dongle, check the supported version.

    • I have the steam controller adapter thing that you need to use it wirelessly not sure if it works with other devices though or only the steam controller.

  • Fighting game. Either get a good, lag-free wireless controller, or learn to live with wires.

Nothing worse than input lag when trying to time moves and string combos.

    • Agreed.
I have been buying eBay cheapos, they were good in the beginning but they are all crap in the end.
Problem always started with analog drift/stutter.
Then the rubber under the buttons will tear so your buttons won’t bounce back.
I have DIY replaced the insides but I had to do this every 1-3 months depending how often I use the controllers.
I have like 10 broken controllers at home, all el cheapos.
Get XB360 or XB1 controller. One of the best decisions I’ve made.

      • Good anecdote yeah this is my fear but stupid stubborn me wants to experience the pain myself haha if you know what I mean.

I went the cheap route for all my other accessories kinda (headset, keyboard, mouse, webcam) and they all work great honestly no problems aside from maybe the look.

So I thought to give the controller a shot because worse case scenario I can resell it or will be a good experience for me to tell others.

But yeah it is amazing how cheap my setup is the only thing I am missing is extra macro buttons on all my devices but the premium for that is easy too expensive and no knock offs or offbrands have tried to imitate that for some reason which is odd because there is a huge market but whatever to each their own.

Are you able to give more info on the knock offs like names or brands or where you purchased it so others like me can know what to steer away from thanks I would appreciate it along with many others.

        • stubborn me wants to experience the pain myself haha if you know what I mean.

          Same same

Are you able to give more info on the knock offs like names

Literally every brand/brandless/generic one on eBay! All 10 of them are different looking. The last one that broke on me was Tronsmart Mars G01.

You wont have functional/connectivity issues. In the long run it’s the quality of the materials that will drive you nuts. I look forward to your forum post in the next couple of months 😂

          • @brokenglish: Haha thanks man your input is of great help I try to entertain but with each post I feel like it will be my last.

Age and fatigue does get to you overtime I feel even if we think we are invincible or I don't know could just be a slump tough period we gotta pull through.

OK so that is good to know the connectivity won't degrade but yeah I am not expecting the buttons to last long but do you know if the knock offs are replaceable for a fraction of the original total cost because if so that might be my best option money value wise.

  • +3

IMO don't buy anything except an Xbox controller. I've had so much trouble with drivers and Bluetooth with other brands. Other people might've had more luck but that's my advice!

  • Ended up getting a $15 one from overseas for now until I find something better.

The great thing about this is it has an inbuilt battery so charging is as simple as plugging in a cable as I hate using batteries and have not found a battery charger yet.

Still looking for a solid one maybe even with extra macro programmable buttons more than the normal controller setup but nothing too expensive unless it is truly worth it and magical.

I am considering wires but honestly I just see a lot of frustration and mess if I add any more wires to my setup it is at critical mass now maybe one or two more might cause entanglement so trying to keep it at a safe level.

Keep the recommendations coming I appreciate all the help.

  • Since you say fighting games, why not just try out keyboard. Hitboxes seem to be all the rage at the moment, and you can bind your keys up to be like one.

    • I might actually stay with keyboard or might even try the cheapest fighting board / arcade controller input.

I did some games on the keyboard already and it works fine I just feel like with the amount of spam and harshness I use on my keyboard in fighting games best to find something else to destroy lol.

But yeah apart from forgetting the location of all the keys it is not a bad option I just feel like a controller might take me back to where it all began and also preserve my keyboard but also I need some sort of controller for parsec since using a controller input or basically not a keyboard or mouse input is highly valuable and parsec hosts love you when you can do that.

Parsec is an online peer to peer free service that let's you connect to others online and play together as of you are all local so basically facilitates local play online and you all play together as of you are all using the hosts pc / server so controller is ideal for multiple players as you can imagine more than 2 - 3 people on the same keyboard can get pretty insane (oh high school memories playing various local multiplayer pc games on the same keyboard all coming back now haha lol)

      :) good times

      • Fair enough if you need a controller for Parsec (didn't really think or know of it). If you do consider using keyboard, I generally find it a lot easier to do most directional inputs on it compared to a controller, so it's quite a good option unless you're thinking about going to tournaments. Just a bit of advice on the fighting part, the cleaner/less buttonmashy your inputs are, the easier it is on both your hands and for whatever move/combo to come out. Hope you have fun with Tekken :)

        • What's the go to input the pros or just any serious player in general from low level tier to celebrity tier uses in terms of controller or arcade or etc?

I honestly might just get that or those most rugged or extra feature one of it is below $200 but preferably one under $100 otherwise I'll just slum it with these ebay ones and work up to the cookie cutter xbox or playstation ones.

Do any tournament goers use wireless inputs or keyboard?

          • @AlienC: Sorry for the late reply. Generally you'll see a lot of older players using fightsticks more often (quite expensive for some of the better ones), although controllers and more recently, hitboxes are getting more popular. Tbh it's more about preference, though there can be factors like wrist pain from a stick, or a mushy dpad that affects your choice. Tourney goers usually used wired, whether controller or stick, and keyboard doesn't really work, since they mostly plug and play with PS4. Hope this clears some stuff up

  • Ive got a gamesir g4s, xbox one controller, and a chinese knockoff of the xbox one (~$35 off aliexpress).

Gamesir - lightweight and usb rechargeable. Battery is half the strength after 3 years, rubber on the controller is falling off. I have used this for the majority of the last 3 years. Connection is awesome, led lights on the controller are very annoying and i turn them off most of the time.
Xbox one controller - awesome controller, but the bluetooth sucks (on my pc). I dont have an 8-bitdo dongle or official $25 xbox one dongle, just a CSR bluetooth reciever. i think my motherboard's bluetooth is gammon too. Works best via usb input.
Chinese knockoff - Connectivity is awesome, via a small dongle similar to xbox 360. Im pretty sure it might be a xbox 360 controller in a xbox 1 shell, firmware is very generic. Buttons are stiff and rigid compared to authentic xbox one controller, and its the heaviest (by a very small margin) of the three. Cant tell if its player 1-4 via the small light that flashes when the power is on.

Ive bought the spare parts to replace the right thumbstick on the gamesir. Ive also got wireless keyboard and mouse, and I think all the wireless connections hate each other.

Overall, the gamesir is my pick. If you're still using an xbox 360 controller with the wireless dongle, dont upgrade, just youtube how to clean it and fix it. theyre awesome controllers.

The only thing im missing is the 6-axis feature that the DS4 (ps3/4) controllers have. It would only be useful for CEMU and some emulators. I'll do without.
