Help with Washing Machine

Hi again, after 27 years my Kleenmaid top loader needs replacing! I think the gearbox has gone. My washing has black marks all over it. Grrr! I had a look today in DJ's where Miele and Bosch front loaders are on special. They both seem similar in functions, energy consumption etc. The Meile is $1599 and Bosch $969. Does anyone have experience with either of these brands? Is it worth paying $630 more for a Miele? Thanks for any points of view.

I bought Bosch over Miele. There were both made in Germany and wash clothes.
Bought a PS4 Pro + VR from the savings and I use PS4 more than the washing machine.

    • There were both made in Germany.

Bosch has several models made in Thailand (and other low cost countries), just make sure you know what you're getting.

        8 series is German made.

FYI, Both Bosch and Miele got non German made models as well.

  • holdenmg, do you have the LG? I have heard that top loaders without agitators tangle your washing. I don't think I need a 10kg machine. It's only for my husband and I. I would like to do the washing more often than I have with the Kleenmaid. The Kleenmaid water level for a small load was so high that I would wait until I had a full load.

    • Yes, the 10kg.

The LG doesn't tangle because the Wash Agitation is effected by alternate Clockwise/Anti-Clockwise movement of the entire bowl. If anything there are less problems simply because the agitator is gone.

Water level is Automated and sensed by the LG so if you add clothes it knows and tops up.

      Smaller unit is: 8.5kg $751

We had an 8.5 kg LG top loader for 8 -9 years. It did 7 loads a week for years until the drum started to smash into the inside walls on spin. We replaced it with a 13 kg LG front loader. The LG is for sensitive washes and a 7.5 kg Samsung for other work.

  • Fisher and Paykel top loaders are very reliable.

  • The Meile is $1599 and Bosch $969

I'd probably go the Bosch (or even a Whirlpool/Samsung/Fisher&Paykel). It'll probably last you 10+ years. I doubt you'll get 16 years out of the Meile (given it costs 60% more).

You'll also find the technology and efficiency of motors changes every 10years and upgrading more frequently will save you money in terms of water consumption and electricity, rather than holding on to the more expensive machine for longer.

    • Don't go Samsung…

      • Why? You might get a new house out of it.

  • Oh also, unless you have a growing family, consider a smaller machine!

  • Got a Bosch, has developed cracks on the top. Also had mechanical issues and it was a struggle to them out to my house. Still haven’t fixed cracks or even called me back months later (despite tech taking photos when he fixed mechanical issue).

  • Mum had a Miele frontloader. After around 7 years it had an issue and needed an expensive repair (around $400 I think). Someone was staying with us and I think they had been putting their washing in washing bags, creating one massive, unbalanceable lump. We had words with them.

Other than that though it was a good unit and lasted another 9 years. In the last few months she replaced it, so I guess it broke again?

Now she has a Beko frontloader. A few years ago I got myself a Beko fl too. From 2nds world or appliancesonline I think, for around $400 or something ridiculous. It's a pretty good unit, we've been happy with it. Can't speak for longevity, but so far so good.

    Get a Beko

  • Thank you for all your imput. The more I think about it, I think I will get a top loader. Preferably one with a stainless steel bowl. It'll save my back from bending or squatting.

    • If you have a bad back, a front loader can be much easier to load/unload if you put it on something to make it the correct height. With a top loader you will still have to reach to the bottom of the tub.
