Cloud Backup Recommendations [iOS]

Hey guys,

First post here. Sorry if it’s in the wrong spot or already an open topic. I struggle with phone storage like everyone else and I’m looking for somewhere secure my phone can store my photos and files on via the internet

iCloud and Dropbox prices are a little too steep for me.. what else is out there? I know it safer to use hard drives but they can break or get stolen

If you care about privacy then iCloud is the best choice.
If you don't then Google Photos/Drive or Amazon Photos/Cloud Drive.

What are the privacy issues with Amazon Cloud Drive compared to iCloud??

iCloud secures your information by encrypting it when it's in transit, storing it in iCloud in an encrypted format, and using secure tokens for authentication. Apple's stance is very pro-privacy and ensuring you're not the product, you pay more for their products.

Amazon Cloud Drive uses Simple Storage Service (S3) which is by default unencrypted. Example source: these guys. They also have clauses stating you give them the right to access your files.

Google Photos has similar clauses giving them a license to “host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works, communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute” your photos. Although, they have come out and said they'll never do that…

Like I said, if you care about privacy, pay more for Apple premium. If you don't care, Amazon/Google/others will be cheaper for sure. If it's free, you're the product being sold.

storing it in iCloud in an encrypted format,

noting that apple has the keys for this so can decrypt this data
not really that different to not being encrypted 'at rest' like amazon

if you want proper encryption that only you can see you should encrypt it pre transit

        • If it's free, you're the product being sold.

Ehhhm, they are all paid? 0_0
Google photos have a 'free' choice as well, but it's not free, that's so 1999 to say things like that.

Apple gives 5gb for free, am i the product? lol

It's up to you but based on what you've asked for I would go with Google Photos - you get unlimited storage for images that are stored in 'High Quality' but if you want the original quality it will use your quota or storage.

I personally use Google Photos and a PC which I use for servers/backups

If you want to store on your own computer https://www.photosync-app.com/home.html (plus it supports lots of cloud providers)

    • WOW I never actually knew that existed!
Seems that this might replace my VPN in and access the SMB share method.

Edit: iOS app is $6 and there's a 'premium subscription' thingy :<<<<

Edit 2: "Tonido" looks like a free alternative to PhotoSync

It was $6 well spent for me, didn't need in app purchase or subscriptions after the initial $6. I got rid of Dropbox which saved a lot more than $6 :) I think those subscription/in-app pricing options there were for earlier versions of the app. I found the developer really great.. I needed access to the beta for access to the newer SMB version and he was quick to respond.

I both purchased and using it on iOS and Android with no problems whatsoever.

Not exactly, Tonido is more like owncloud/nextcloud

Will give this a try later on, been wanting to replace my current backup system.
          Cheers

          Ah

        • Does this renames photo based on time and date or keeps original name?

          • @SJ50: it's customisable, you can have either original name or have it change it to time and date if you want

seems like a new version released today, it now can sync with Google Photos - the premium/pro purchases that you noticed apply to new version! You can see the details of new version here: https://www.photosync-app.com/support/release-notes/photosyn…

  • I personally use OneDrive… I buy a Office365 Home subscription from SaveOnIT for around $90, that gives me office365 access on 5 devices plus 1TB OneDrive storage…. PLUS I can share with 5 other Microsoft accounts, each shared account gets its own 1TB OneDrive storage & Office365 access on 5 devices….

So even if only for the OneDrive storage, you're effectively getting 6TB for $90 a year.

The OneDrive app on your phone syncs up your camera roll & you can choose to keep in original HEIF format or convert to jpg.

You’ve got an iOS device. Simplest solution is iCloud.

  • I’ve been looking into this as well. At the moment I’m leaning towards pCloud, mapping it as a network drive and pointing my iTunes backups there. They have monthly plan $4 USD 500GB $8 USD for 2TB, or $175/ $350 USD respectively for lifetime access

Thanks for all the tips, for now I went with google photos, but still looking into all the suggestions!

  • I would go for an iCloud. And if the price is too high for you, try to do some calculations and compare the price with buying 2 HDD drives (one for a backup of another). Assume that the HDD will last around 5 years.

  • Why pay for icloud and basically lock yourself in Apple ecosystem? No reason at all, unless you 100% invested in the Apple ecosystem
Google photos is the way to go, either free with lower quality or paid with original quality.
