      That's the AC300

How does this compare to the Xiaomi Air Purifier 2S? How much are the replacement filters?

    • +8

I have both and can comment.

The Vornado's fan is more powerful and breezy (for this reason I think it will be more effective and purify a room faster) but it is also a lot noisier. There are 4 levels. I would never use level 4. Level 1 is slightly audible. Lv 2 is quite audible. Lv 3 is very noisy. Lv 4, forget about it.

The Xiaomi is silent at low levels. At high levels will be noisy but not as noisy. Its filters are also cheaper ($39 at Kogan). The Vornado requires 2 types of filters and the HEPA alone costs more.

The Xiaomi is more compact than the Vornado which is quite big.

The Xiaomi has smart features, the Vornado does not. You can log into your Xiaomi via phone app and see more details and perform some actions remotely.

I have found that the PM03 sensing is better on the Xiaomi. What I mean by this is, in auto mode both purifiers will ramp up the fans when they detect more PM03 in the air, but the Xiaomi does this more often. I have used both purifiers in the same spot and can directly compare. The Xiaomi does detect smoke and ramps up. The same smoke does not trigger a response in the Vornado, even though it's quite awful smelling to a non smoker and triggers my breath-holding instinct. But the Vornado is sensitive to my cooking. When I cook stuff, even from a distance, it turns on its fans. Maybe they are making a statement about my cooking…

Having used both, I honestly prefer the Xiaomi. And it will be cheaper to run.

      • Great comparison mate. Where do you reckon is the best place (cheap) to buy the Xiaomi purifier and filter?

        • Filter from Kogan when they do free shipping promos. Stock up on a few then.

The purifier itself I got from an ebay sale which coincided with a % off discount. I don't remember the seller. Might have been Gearbite.

  • Anyone got comparison to other models? To Philips? Only down to .3 or whatever so does nothing for PM 2.5 I assume?

    • +1

      Thats 0.3 microns
      PM2.5 is 2.5 microns

  • comment on Amazon seems poor. some say the fan make rattling noise after some time.

  • Main thing is how much does the filter cost ?

    • It has two types of filters. Charcoal filter (x2) and HEPA filter (x1).

The Charcoal filters are replaced at twice the frequency of the HEPA filter. So you will need to replace 4 charcoal filters for every 1 HEPA filter.

The Charcoal filters (2 pack) were $20.90 when I bought it and the HEPA filter was $53.90.

The replace filter gauge is determined by time elapsed, not analyzing the condition of the filters. You can clean the charcoal filters with a vacuum cleaner and get a little more life out of them.

      • Someone has corrected me below.

It actually requires two HEPA filters, not one. You do get two in the box though.

If you're buying a round of replacement filters, buy three twin packs of Charcoals (6 filters) and two HEPAs. That will cover you for around 2 years.

  • I shall be getting a $39 price protection claim.

I bought from Vornado direct for $199. Luckily for me Vornado didn't accept AMEX or Paypal or I would have paid via that instead of 28 Degrees.

  • 100% claimed. Guess people really love their air filters.

edit: no wait, thats just the white model. Black model is only at 70% currently
edit2: No, now the white model is at 50%. Guess they added more stock or they are playing around with numbers to try and panic people into buying.

  • Bought one, from reviews it seems pretty decent for allergies, hope it will help my son sleep better!

Unless I’m reading their site wrong, the thing that put me off was the price of the filters. Vornado’s website has the replacement Hepa filter at $75 each and according to the Vornado site and instruction manual, you actually need 2 of these in the larger AC500, so in 12 months time that brings the cost to $150 to replace them. The carbon filters are in a twin pack for $30, so unless you can find the filters cheaper elsewhere, maybe grab a second machine just for the extra filters?

    • There's a comment above about the price of filters.

      • Yes but they say you only need one Hepa filter which according to the Vornado website is incorrect.

        • +1

I just went and opened it up. You're right, there are two HEPA filters. One for each fan.

So in actuality you need 4 filters, but the HEPAs last twice as long as the charcoals.

          • @lostn: I took so long to decide that the deal had expired but that was lucky because in my rush to find an air purifier and seeing this deal I didn’t factor in room size and need something larger. Thanks for checking on the filters.

            • @PrinceDarebin: It's quite capable of purifying a relatively large room… but the noise might be too much to bear.

    • The carbon filters are in a twin pack for $30, so unless you can find the filters cheaper elsewhere, maybe grab a second machine just for the extra filters?

If you care about the environment, please don't do this. This thing is quite huge and a waste to throw away. This is like people buying a new printer for the starter toner. Just wait till they are on sale.

I bought the HEPAs for $53.

      Otherwise stick to Xiaomi 2S.

      • Agreed…I hated myself for suggesting it as soon as I hit the post comment button.

  • Can someone post a link to where they suggest I buy a Xiaomi Air Purifier 2S
