Aldi Sim better reception than Telstra!?

I have a Moto G7 Power dual sim, I have often noticed that I can be in an are with no Telstra reception (SIM 1) and yet I'll still have a couple of bars on Aldi (SIM 2)!

I was under the impression that the Telstra service area was superior, that Aldi was basically 'Telstra Lite"?

This is definitely not a one off…..I often work in some very patchy areas and have noticed this phenomenon many times and have never noticed the reverse, ie. having Telstra service but not Aldi.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Try to limit your saturated fat intake.
In the long run its better for you.

  • Recently switched to Aldi from Telstra as well. I've had similar experiences

Are you sure your phone treats both sims equally? Always 4G for both? doesnt have any power saving functionality?

I know my Xiaomi phones don't.

      THIS
4G on both sims is unlikely
most likely sim 2 is running on 3G which can at times have a stronger signal as opposed to a 4G signal which needs to switch down to 3G when signal drops below a certain threshold

Glad someone else is on the same page. I agree that dual ACTIVE 4G is hard to get - im sure people will bring up models to prove us wrong.

It wouldn't surprise me if Sim 1 is low signal 4G, and sim 2 is high 3G when OP notices the issue.

Or, if sim 2 is only for phone calls, it pushes it to 3G to save power.

        etc

        • You guys may well be right…..at the moment the Telstra sim is connected to LTE, the Aldi sim locked to UMTS…….

            @Actionman77:

            Aldi sim locked to UMTS

LOL should have mentioned this at the start.

The ALDI fanboy love has gone too far with this one…

  • So the fact that the Aldi sim stays locked to 3g makes it more reliable for voice calls?

  • If it makes you feel better you can also manually change the telstra network to 3g as well to see if reception is the same.

Just remember to switch back or your mobile data speeds might take a hit.

    • Thanks Heb, will give it a go……..so it seems Aldi would be the way to go for more reliable voice?

      • If both on 3g, you would think it's all the same.

Obviously you want the most stable so if it's using 3g with higher bars than 4g with one bar, that would probably be best imo.

Test it out yourself see if you can notice any difference!

I've noticed on mobile data, it can be different as someone near you might be using one or the other network a bit heavy (typically telstra I've noticed lately so when I switch to aldi it's a lot faster).

  • Someone who has been on Aldi and Boost told me they get better reception out of Aldi. Which makes no sense to me but what would I know.

  • An update……switched phone to 3g as my preferred network, I now have zero signal with telstra but 2 bars with Aldi.
    Colour me confused.

    • This will sound stupid but have you tried restarting phone afterwards?

What happens if you switch the two sims around after a restart ie. aldi in slot 1 and telstra in 2 both on 3g (WCDMA NOT GSM)?

Hhahaha well maybe you are a real aldi fanboy - stick with what works for you and chuck out the telstra sim! We all know Telstra is generally overpriced no secrets there…

      • I also wouldn't rely necessarily on bars alone. You really should be testing it out via .calls see what works best for you.

The bars could just be emergency signal only. I don't work in telecoms so I probably can't comment moe but maybe someone else will have a better idea.

My understanding is it should be exactly the same reception wise. Data might be another story.
