Air Fresheners - most effective and economical?

Hi guys,

What's the OzBargainer's approach to Air Fresheners?

I'm interested in the AirWick Freshmatic devices, but it appears that the refills cost about $5.60 on sale. Advertised as lasting 60 days on the lowest settings, which is ok if lasts the full period.

Is there any other air fresheners that is economical? It doesn't have to be automatic.

It will be used in the bathroom to keep it smelling fresh.

I use the window and the fumes from the deodorant i use.
I saw a photo of one of those plug in air fresheners online which caught fire, so they scare me.
Unless im tryna impress i might chuck some garlic bread in the oven.

all that stuff you are spraying in the air and breathing in might not be good for you

This, you're caking your lungs (and others) with the crap. Open the the windows $0.00 and wont get lung problems.

Air fresheners are revolting, smell too strong, and may mess with guests' sinuses etc. Just keep it clean with a window part way open and it will smell fresh, give it one puff of perfume once a week if you want to, but that's it.

    As per mtg, above.
Worth a read OP, as you appear unaware -

This, incidentally, is another very good reason - beyond initial depreciation, to buy vehicles at the 18 month to 2 year mark, where feasible, dissuadable. New car smell very nice, but represents significant and persistent, issue. Something to factor-in if also unaware of that.

Take as will. Difficult to predict OzBargain, on at least some things..

    • Very interesting. Do you happen to know if the same applies to essential oil used in diffusers?

      • I would also like to know the answer to this. Let me know if you come across something in your travels.

      • Likely even more than you wanted to learn, but just reading through highlights as compiled on this page, will at least give sense of how complex the whole issue is :)
Little there that an aromatherapist would wish you to read.

Good to read just Abstract, Introduction, and Discussion toward bottom of the page, here.

Practical - If pregnant, consider less exposure to any and all, regardless of origin, to be erring on side of being sensible. Good if approach extends variously beyond that. Doesn't mean going completely overboard in that direction.

If going to use diffuser for any because still keen, reed version suggested sounds like good idea.

I'm going to largely avoid subject of scented candles, given the household invasion of those. Same

Success in having them only very occasionally lit, is something. Beeswax or paraffin otherwise, there are few better ways to properly pollute the air in your home, than with bloody candles. No matter how nice they smell.

…and, some very noble essential oils released in process of liberating E.T. from this tree!

Thanks, was not aware of the health hazard. Will digest the article and research further.

In the car I chuck my apple cores in an unused passenger foot well - the car ends up smelling like apples. They get mouldy after a while - just remove and replace as needed. Works with orange peel too. And banana peels, but I find that gross.

  • If the bathroom has a window then open the window a bit. It will keep the room drier and smelling fresh

If there's no window (like in many new apartments) then the low speed extractor fan should be working 24/7 (I'm fairly sure that's a requirement under the BCA).

I grow basil and mint and bring a handful in and leave it in a bowl to dry. In my old house I also had rosemary and lavender. Just give it a mix up every now and then. Any smelly foliage works - mango leaves are great. Fresh orange peels, etc

You can also use an essential oil burner ($5 at kmart) or essential oils on cotton balls or potpourri.

Reed diffusers last forever too. You can make them if you want. https://www.frugalandthriving.com.au/diy-reed-diffuser/

    • Currently have a reed diffuser, but lasts only 20 days? Any particular off the shelf product that lasts longs?

      • We have an oil based one. The oil doesn't travel up the stick very well but I just pull out the reeds, invert them and put the dry end in the oil every few weeks. It's been going for almost 3 years (Ok, that's not forever)

  • I use D&G no.3 perfume. $50 on sale. I spray it onto the carpet.

  • I've been using Ambipur, non-aerosol, simple mist spray. Does the job quite good and comes in scents that are very pleasant and not overpowering which I don't like with some other brands.

  • I like natural alternatives so I buy diatomaceous earth from https://www.diatomaceousearthonline.com.au/
I put it in a little container or a bowl and put it in my fridge or laundry or pantry and it absorbs the smells!
