Ideal Time to Sell Car and Upgrade

Hey all,

I bought a 2015 WRX CVT with 40k kms back in late 2017. Managed to snag up a good deal on it. Paid $27K.
(Yes I know.. Why would I get a CVT WRX? Cause I had surgery on my left leg after a football accident so I decided to give up the clutch for a bit)
Now that it's been two years, I've just hit 90k kms.

I've been looking around for an upgrade now. Not necessarily faster or anything. Potentially even just a newer WRX with less miles on it.
Don't really like the idea of keeping them for as long as possible as they depreciate quite heavily plus more maintenance costs. I've heard horror stories of WRX + CVT's expecially hitting the 100K+ km range.

1) When do you think the ideal time is to sell an 'affordable' sports car.
2) How much do you think I can negotiate with a dealer for a brand new car? Looking at i30N, Focus ST, WRX, Golf R.

When do you think the ideal time is to sell an 'affordable' sports car.

When you need/want a new one

How much do you think I can negotiate with a dealer for a brand new car? Looking at i30N, Focus ST, WRX, Golf R.

Ugh, have you read these forums at all?

First off, find the actual car you want within the budget you're hoping to be around, then talk haggling. Don't try to haggle before settling on a car.

When you need/want a new one

Whenever really. Before servicing/depreciation hits rapidly again. Ideally the end of the year I guess.

Ugh, have you read these forums at all?

Yeah a tonne, but I'm asking generally if there's a rough guideline to negotiation.
After all the first three cars on the list are all $44k listed price. Golf R is the only one that's a significant price jump.

      • Whenever really. Before servicing/depreciation hits rapidly again. Ideally the end of the year I guess.

That actually wasn't a question. The ideal time to upgrade is whenever you want or need to. If you trade in to avoid a $1500 service, for example, it just means they'll value your car $1500 less. If it's coming up to expensive maintenance, they'll give you less for your car knowing that.

but I'm asking generally if there's a rough guideline to negotiation.

Nope, every vehicle has different margins. Depends whether it's on any form of special or not as well.

There are multiple source online to find out what people have paid for their car. That might help. But try the cars out first and pick one before bothering with that.

        • "There are multiple source online to find out what people have paid for their car"
can you please provide an example, I am intrigued
          .

        • -1

It doesn’t work quite like that. Look at it on the flip side, they’re not going to give you $1,500 more for your car after it’s been serviced etc. maybe a few hundred but not what you’ll pay in a service

          • @glados: Well it does work that way… It's a common form of haggling. If you knew a car you were looking at needed a timing belt replaced, or needed tyres etc, would you not bargain down the price to compensate?

  • +5

    what's the budget?

    80k?

    • -1

50K. All the cars listed fall under the 50K category. Except the Golf R. I would buy a one year old one which is about 45K.

        • +5

          Kia i30N?

Sounds like you have been hitting up on the cough medicine…..

          • +2

@RockyRaccoon: I've heard the Kia i30N Stinger edition produces the best kimchi. Great cars all round. I would strongly consider Korean for my next car.

          • @RockyRaccoon: Kia is basicslly owned by Hyundai. So there's that…

  • +3

Ideal time to sell the car? Yesterday or tomorrow, not today.

    • This is one of the dumbest thread of the week.

He bought a sporty-car relatively new and wants to upgrade already, which is definitely against the OzBargain Code. On top of that he wants to get a new sports car but doesn't know which model or which budget. On top of that, wants advice for it without any input.

Sounds exactly like another Westpac Banker with $80k to spend on an AMG high yield investment.

      • +1

Tell me how this is dumb?

Upgrading early? Upgrading is dependent on when someone wants to upgrade. Just because you'd keep a car for 10 years doesn't mean everyone will.

Yeah I do know what I want. I listed the cars I'm interested in. I've test driven them all, and I enjoy them all. Honest'y I'd be happy with any one of the four cars.

        • -5

Well, there's three main ways of upgrading cars:

          1) Your car is now so old, and it makes no financial sense to keep it.
          2) You bought the car of your dreams, and kept it for a long time, but the new technology is vastly improved.
          3) You buy and sell cars for good value.

…you don't fit into any of those traditional categories.
You bought a car which you weren't fully happy about, and you paid top dollar for it to experience it brand new. Now, you want to sell it off after it has done the major depreciation. That's nothing but wasteful. Of course majority of people are going to disagree with you on this, especially in a community forum dedicated for bargains/value. And the vehicles your lamenting aren't super pricey so that means you aren't particularly "money is no object, I'm loaded" form of rich. So it doesn't even pass the sniff/rationality test. On top of this, you barely put any parameters for people to help give you advice, we know nothing about what is suitable for you or not.

          So yeh… a dumb thread.
(even Spackbace isn't amused, and he's a car salesman)

          • @Kangal: Where did I say I wasn't fully happy about? I said people have had issues and I was asking when is the IDEAL time to sell.

Yeah mateeeeeee. People disagree. Thats why I'm asking around people who are bargainers when the ideal time is to sell. Sheesh no wonder you get down voted. Not looking for a crappy rant. Looking for advice.

            NEXT.

            • -1

@tempestswitch: You asked for the rant, so I provided the rant, why the surprised pikachu face?
If you want ideal time: upgrade when you can afford it, and when you want to.

Now if you provided us with more information, we could give better advice than that. But as I repeated before, you kept things vague so we can only help you vaguely. And let's not be pedantic, you aren't fully-happy about it, otherwise this thread wouldn't exist. It's like making a thread asking "where's the best place to replace iPhone 11 Pro screen" and people telling you that you should've used a protective case and you replying "who says the screen is broken". Pedantic.

If you want to know what bargainers (people who emphasise money/value) think is the best time to upgrade their car, the answer is going to be orientated around depreciation, servicing, and cost of a different car. And I already gave you the three main scenarios above of when those scenarios arise. So I don't know what more you want from people on this thread.

As I said earlier, our resident expert on this topic is Spackbace.

Go for a test drive and find what you like
Don't let the dealer know you how much you want it
Have a pretend person e.g the partner who is not there who makes the final decision.
Claim your partner will berate you if you don't get a good price
    Be prepared to walk away
Try different dealers and look at demo models too.
Don't buy extra addons, scratch insurance
Haggle for extra free addons carmats, tinting, optional addons etc
See if what they have on display/at the lot is cheaper
Wait for run out/model clearance sale
Do research on other peoples prices and use a quote from another dealer and ask if they can beat it
Don't fall for the I'll ask my manager/deference of reponsibility trick yourself.
Find of the cost of production if you can(very hard only if you have inside knowledge)

    • I like the sound of this. Yeah I've never added on any other packages. Usually make them include mats for free.

I've heard people pretending to buy the model below so when the salesman tries to upsell, then they think they're doing an amazing job.

2015 and 90k's is still a very young car, if it was me I would probably hang onto it for another 5 years. I think around 10 years old is a good time to think about a change, but Toyotas, Mazdas etc can be kept going for 20 years easily without much expenditure at all. I like driving a nice car, but don't like the expenditure that goes with it, so best thing to do is look for cars which depreciate hard, buy at around 3-5 years old and keep for ~5 years then upgrade. You get to drive a nice car without spending much, save a lot of money over time.

    • Thanks mate. You've got a valid point. Honestly, if I could I would be more than happy to keep the car for another 5 years. It's just there's many horror stories of my specific model going kaput especially a few years down the road. I've already had a few issues with the car regarding warranty claims, check engine lights, etc.

I'd like to get back into a manual and into a car that is all about raw driving feel and performance. And the odd track day.

      • I would choose from the WRX sti (used) an i30n and a civic type r (used) in that order of preference.

      • Dude. Sell your rexy, buy the exact same one with a manual. Laugh all the way to the bank cause you didn't throw 20k down the drain.

If you like your car but just want a manual… that's so easy. If you want some upgraded tech or looks, heck, throw another 5k in and get a sick head unit and some cool rims. Don't get a new car just for the sake of it.

When do you think the ideal time is to sell an 'affordable' sports car.

    3.30pm

    • Damn might try again tomorrow.

      • 4.20pm, or shortly after that

  • Which car that your interested in has the latest body shape change or due for 1 and not just minor body upgrades. Go for that 1 in my opinion, you will stand out more on the road with the latest. Definitely not a Hyundai for a sports car. Lol.

    • -1

Personally, I haven't found a car that I think looks better than a WRX. Although the i30N has come such a long way and people are praising it as the best sports car under 50K.

  • +1

Out of left field but have you considered an A35? It might be a cost a bit more than a Golf R but its a new gen model, decent amount of power from a little 2.0l turbo but you gotta fork our $80k for it.

    • +1

Thought about it. But it'll make me want the A45. I personally can't justify spending more than 50K on a car.I could go used, but I wouldn't for a used Mercedes

" I've heard horror stories of WRX + CVT's expecially hitting the 100K+ km range"

First I heard of that and Ive owned WRXs for 15 years. We have JDM WRX and horror stories are from poorly built US models (head gaskets etc..) Subaru as long its maintained will last a very long time. My 2003 WRX still going strong even with 400HP, original motor and gearbox, and its seen racetracks.

Buying a VW is more of a waste of money

    • -1

100% agree with you. WRX's are strong and can go a long way. But I'm not worried about any part except the transmission. So many stories I've heard of people blowing trannies ;)

      • +1

I've seen dumbarse Americans doing engine rebuilds on 2015 STIs. Idiots abuse these cars. Treat with mechanical sympathy and you will be fine.

Dont listen to the american vapeboy ballbags

        • -1

Fair call. Most issues are with USDM models. I think I'm also itching to get back into a manual after so long.

          • +1

            @tempestswitch: Then just be honest.

Its actually a good point to sell, there are major depreciation points. 40,000, 100,000, 150,000, 200,000. Reason why I sold my old WRX since it was nearing the 200,00km (160K on the clock). So made economic sense, sold it for $14K. Bought a STI with 5000km on it for 39K. Cheap upgrade.

    50,000KMS in 2 years… OUCH

Yep. Welcome to a wedding photographers life. Constant trips up and down to Hunter and Canberra.

Shame you not in Melbourne… could hire you :P

        • +1

I'd fly down for a Melbourne job hehehe

  • +2

looks like you don't mind if it's FWD or AWD.

    • Yeah I'm honestly not too fussed about FWD vs AWD. Yes there are advantages and disadvantages to both but after test driving the FWD cars, they're plenty for me.

      • +1

Not sure what was neg worthy about that comment, have a +1

  • If I was after a newish hot hatch today, I'd be heading to Honda and Hyundai.

Civic Type R is excellent as is i30 N. Of course the Type R will have to be used/demo to match the i30 N price.

When is the (new) Focus ST out? Ford really bumped up the price (and performance). It's quicker than the RS on the Nurb.

I wouldn't get a Golf R today, current model is being superceded shortly.

I have nothing against the Golf or European cars (my last 4 cars have been European, including a Golf GTI).

Can't believe how long it's taken Subaru to release the new WRX based on the new Impreza generation.

Subaru have really dropped the ball on the WRX.

The next gen WRX/STI is around the corner. It's Subaru's last car to move onto the Subaru Global Platform, and historically they release a new model every 5 or so years. Current model was released in 2014, so it's definitely due.

If a new model WRX comes out, I'd suspect the current gen WRX to take a bit of a price hit - especially ones with a CVT. The CVTs on the WRXs are being pushed to their limit. They can't handle much more than an exhaust, intake and slight tune before they start to slip. This will make it harder for it to hold onto its value as the aftermarket potential for a CVT WRX is limited. The new STI is also rumoured and highly likely to have a new engine too, moving away from the aged EJ257 to possibly an FA24.

One important thing to note in regards to the CVT is that whilst our Subarus and CVTs are made in Japan - USDM WRXs are made in the US including the CVT. US built CVTs are having far more problems than Japanese ones. A lot of people also abuse the shit out of their cars. The CVTs are definitely being pushed to their limit, but if you've been driving normally and haven't been giving it a hard time you probably wouldn't have an issue.

If you want to upgrade because you want something new and you can afford it, probably sell before a new model is announced/released. Otherwise, your car is still rather new and if you've taken good care of your car it will have a lot of life left. The worst of the depreciation on your car has already happened.

    • Rumours say there might be a new 86/brz at Tokyo. If that happens, and they get a power boost…yummy!

  • Hi OP, if you are going to sell the WRX shoot me a message i am keen on it.
