  • I bet you can really taste the difference in bubble purity

    • The internet says that the plastic bottles aren't BPA free or something. So if you are going to get one then the glass ones probably better to go for.

      • It's not like a plastic bottle contains infinite BPA. Either the amount being leeched out is beyond trivial, or it will run out of BPA to leech after a few rounds of use.

        • Run out into your gut, killing you. Great plan!

Phthalates (plasticisers) are commonly found in arterial plaques. Causal relationship is unknown but it's not like you'd want to invite them into your body to hang around for decades in your cholesterol deposits.

They're safe enough that some exposure is fine, but it's always nice to have the option.

  • What's the difference between this and the other models? Thinking about getting the Spirit as it's only $78 to try

    • +3

It uses glass instead of plastic to appease the anti-science paranoids.

The regular models are fine. From the cheapest white plastic model sold at Big W to the fanciest designer models, they all basically work in the same way and achieve the same results. Some look prettier than others. And the Sodastream Source Power automates the process into a single button push—if you use it a lot, it's surprisingly convenient.

To get the most out of a Sodastream, you should get a second gas cylinder (so you can swap over as soon as it empties) and a few extra water bottles so you can keep plenty of chilled tap water in the fridge ready to fizz up on demand.

(And if you like flavour, Sodastream's cordial range is mostly outstanding, with special mention to their exceptional sugar-free Pink Grapefruit. I also enjoy their lemonade combined with a few shakes of angostura bitters. And they have a diet cola which would satisfy anyone who isn't a cola snob. There's only one serious dud in their range and that's the "zeros lime" which is astonishingly foul. I love fresh lime. I even enjoy Cottee's "coola lime" that looks like floor cleaner. But even the tiniest drip of "zeros lime" mixed with lemon and bitters made the result unpleasant.)

Lets put this here from above:

      • I'm a fan of lime flavour in general. I tried other lime cordials from the supermarket and they were also foul, no matter what dilution I used. Maybe lime cordial is just disgusting.

Thanks Simon. So essentially the price difference is body of the machine and the bottles (plastic vs glass etc). Bit confusing since they have 7 models listed which essentiall do the same thing.

PS. Glass vs plasticsBPA blah. Not that fussed about it. But my wife is anti-science/logic, so I wont argue and I'll be getting the Crystal.
Will double check that its not leaded crystal lol.

  • How long do the bubbles last? Can you pre-bottle and store for a few days or do you need to drink it straight away to get the bubbles. Partner likes lightly bubbled spring water. Although probably still cheaper to buy the shop bottles for conveienance.

It's always most efficient to gas on demand.

The gassing process is also more efficient when the water is colder, so keep a bunch of chilled, still tap water in the fridge ready to go in Sodastream bottles and fizz them up on demand. With the normal system (not this special) you can get 500ml and 1000ml sodastream bottles, which are perfect for 1–3 servings.

Sodastream bubbles aren't fundamentally different to other bubbles: a partially used bottle will go flat after a few days because there's a substantial volume of air inside the bottle for the gas to escape into. (When there's only a small amount of air in the neck, the fizz can be preserved a lot longer.)

    • I gas 4-6 (plastic) bottles at a time (all kept full and cold in fridge). Still good after a week or more.

When it's so trivial gas a bottle, what's the upside of storing it pre-gassed?

I just keep lots of bottles in the fridge full of still tap water.
