Unsure Whether or Not to Get a Chromecast

I’m not the most tech savvy person, so I need a little help. I think I understand what they do (cast things like YouTube, Netflix etc from your phone, iPad etc to your TV)
What I am unsure of, is in this day and age where most TVs have integrated Netflix and YouTube apps, are Chromecasts needed?

I just got a Mini FetchTV Box with my internet plan. Is it worth it to get a Chromecast? Can someone explain what it can offer that the fetch and tv can’t do.

Thank you fir your help! :)

  • Chromecast is just easier or you can buy Vodafone TV box

I’m not tech savvy either. I got a cheap smart tv for the first time recently thinking I won’t need a chromecast like the one at my mums place. But the tv remote has no keyboard and it’s painful to search for anything when typing is required or even browsing around using up/down left/right + enter button is excruciating

    • This is the biggest advantage of Chromecast in my opinion.
      Searching sucks on anything else.

The next biggest is that it is the ONLY box to support ALL streaming services (with the possible exception of AppleTV). Your SmartTV probably only supports a limited number of services.

  • For me it's worth it. I got the original Chromecast.

They are $50. Return it if you don't like it. I find it much faster than local apps (Hisense TV so slow processor/Bad UI) and less cumbersome than my Xbox. So I have a similar situation but still lean towards the chromecast for 90% of my casting needs (Kayo, Netflix, NBA, You Tube & Screen Mirroring).

    • I was thinking of getting a Chromecast for kayo, how is the streaming quality? I was previously playing kayo through my xbox one browser and it wasn't a great experience.

      • I use kayo on Chromecast and it works great, there has been occasionally poor connection that happens on their side of things but it's fairly rare.

  • I could never get the Chromecast to work to my satisfaction. Perhaps it was my set up, but it was constantly stalling/buffering and was basically unwatachable. Ended up just plugging the laptop straight into the TV and working that way.

The Vodafone TV set up, on the other hand, has been a game changer. It simply does what it says it does. No muss, no fuss.

I don’t reckon that was the chromecasts fault - that sounds more like a weak wifi signal to me.

  • Somehow my Chromecast + Samsung TV manage to link with my Getflix and I can get US Netflix on the TV itself. Makes it worth it for me

    • So my lifetime getflix account is not useless after all

  • Thanks for your input everyone, I think I will get one., now just to find the best deal :)

    • A bit late to the party, but for me, it is absolutely worth it to get it. I've got Sony smart TVs and the apps are still buggy at times and will close occasionally. Even for my Samsung smart TV that works well with the in built apps, the Chromecast really is worth it when streaming things like Kayo, the NBA app, Spotify, and even streaming movies right from the mobile browser. It isn't just screen mirroring, so you can still use your mobile as per normal while casting.
