What Are Some Fun, Novel, and/or Interesting Experiences in Melbourne?

Hi all,

With birthdays of loved ones (close friends and family members), I'm not usually a fan of gifting material gifts solely for the act of giving something but rather prefer gifting unique experiences that we can share for memories sake.

Some examples of what I've done in the past include buying gift cards for a boat ride at Studley Boat House, tickets to the Eureka skydeck, flight tickets to Sydney, kayaking in the Yarra, etc.

My partner's birthday is coming up soon and because I've sort of ran out of ideas, my question is to you is: what are some of your fun, novel, and/or interesting experiences in Melbourne?

    • Looks super cool! Interesting concept but not sure how wasteful I feel after…

My friends and I have started finding some cooking classes at various restaurants. Cocktail making classes are also fun.

You could do a hot air balloon? Or do one of those paint your friend classes at Cork and Canvas. They’re actually great fun.

    • Hot air balloon was a consideration, but it is damn $$$ — better bang of the buck if we're to do it somewhere like Bagan, Myanmar for example.

Cork and Canvas sounds cool and chill.

      • Cork and canvas is great fun. You can take in dinner and drinks too. I’m usually a perfectionist so it was great to be forced to do something to completion in 2 hours. They pretty much encourage you to do and not think. I’m actually super proud of my work too 😂

      • Can also recommend doing hot air balloon in Vang Vieng, Laos.

    Horse trail riding at woodlands

    • What was your experience like? How were the horses? I'm not much of a horse-rider but I've had experiences when travelling where horses aren't well taken care of …

Underground cinema can be a different sort of experience - https://www.undergroundcinema.com.au/

    • Did know of a friend who did this before, extremely unique concept

      • I’ve gone a few times, sometimes the experience is really great, others are a bit ‘meh’. Also the sound during the actual film can be pretty horrible depending on the space they use. Still, I would recommend it at least once.

  • Axe throwing?

    • Is there a cargo seating option that's actually affordable?! But that kinda defeats the point I guess…

The ginkgos, beeches and maples at Nicholas gardens would be my pick.

    • A beautiful and pleasant experience on a good day!

  • The high street on a the weekend.

Go to Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park for a night tour.

Really great place to visit and much better experience than most zoos. You'll get up close and personal with some of them too.

    • Sounds interesting… but $260 for two people is quite steep for a one-hour night tour…

Is it significantly better than visiting during the day?

      • That the price for the private tours. Just go on one of the public ones for $50 a person or less with any concessions. ($150 for 2 adults plus 2 kids on a family ticket).

Also these run for 90-120 minutes so not sure why you would choose the private ones.

I haven't been during the day but a lot of what they have there are going to be more active at night, like pretty much all the marsupials so I would go night time.

And pretty unusual for overseas visitors too.
