Getting Jewellery Made Overseas - Pros & Cons

Hiya,

I'm thinking of getting a replica of a family heirloom that was stolen made. This is what the ring looked like. The centre diamond was 0.35 carat and was surrounded by a halo of 10 x rose cut diamonds. It was a fairly popular style in the early 1900's and would have been in my family for over a 100 years.

I've noticed that James Allen has something similar , which they're happy to modify to look more like my grandma's ring by setting the centre diamond lower. There's also the possibility of either going with a yellow sapphire or even a yellow diamond for the main stone so it'll look more like my wife's favourite flower, the daisy.

So my questions are :

  • Is it even worth asking for a quote locally when JA already has something so close to what I'm looking for at a fairly reasonable price? Not only am I planning to order the main diamond from them but they also often have 25% off promotions and as an OzBargainer, I love a discount.

  • 18K yellow gold is way too banana yellow in colour and I was thinking of getting the ring made in 14k gold instead. Will that be an issue if I ever need to get it cleaned or repaired locally?

Just for the fun of it : Do you like the ring? Assuming you're a woman, would you wear it?

Thanks :)

It's beautiful! I would cherish it and pass it down to my daughter / DIL someday.

Too old-fashioned. I would be embarrassed to wear it.

JA design is a stunning ring - totes would wear!

Very reminiscent of French design cluster rings of the era.

    • White diamond, yellow diamond or sapphire for the center stone? :)

White diamond, for me however the sentiment behind your possible choice of a yellow diamond is very sweet.

Not all jewellers do 14K, but some do. Like there's one near us that does both 22K and 14K repairs as well as make jewellery. And they're cheaper than other jewellers in the area too so I still go there for normal repairs.

I've had 2 rings made overseas through a reputable jeweller with no issue, and JA have an excellent reputation. Only issue is the cruddy AUD now…

The other option is looking for jeweller here that makes pieces too as a price comparison. The style in the photo you had is something that most decent jewellers could made.

On a different note, sorry to hear that the heirloom was stolen. That totally sucks balls…

    • Thank you.

I had my engagement ring done through James Allen. Was great service, much cheaper than AUS and great quality work. It was a 1.2 diamond and they provided the advice on the quality, options etc

  • I've asked for a quote today andwas given a spiel on how gold is at its highest its ever been and was given a quote of $995 for the ring made in 9K gold as they don't offer 14K. This does not include the centre diamond. That seem excessive, doesn't it? JA is only $995 for 14k.
