New Phone for Work

Hi,

Random topic but I thought some here might have some opinions.

I've just landed a new sales manager job and unlike all my previous employers in these kind of roles, my new company won't be supplying me a phone – they want me to use a personal phone to contact clients etc. Had an IPhone 7 at my last job which was fine but now considering my options.
Would an IPhone 8 or IPhone 11 be that much of a better option for my situation?
Needs:
A lot of phone calls in and out.
Using it for GPS both in car (and car play in rental cars) while walking finding customers offices.
Roaming for work trips to NZ
A lot of overall usage (50 hours per week)

There is also the question of tax deductions for this type of purchase - would it make more sense to buy an IPhone 11 as I can get a bigger deduction. And would it be better buying it outright or buying it on a plan (very likely to go with vodaphone as their roaming options for NZ are the best fit for me)

With those needs above, should I wait for the Iphone 11 or just settle for an 8?

Thanks in advance

  • Why do you need to wait for 11?

    • I thought there was a bit of a wait for the IPhone 11 through Vodaphone, but it seems that Vodaphone are now delivering it.

    • Actually I didnt buy one in the end, as I quit that crappy job which required a car (and paid a car allowance). New job has a lot of interstate/os travel so have put the car purchase on hold for a bit longer.

  • If you have to use your own phone and plan do you get to expense the cost to the business?

    • Only for calls made. I start the job today so I have to work out with my manager how that works.

      • +1

Hmm. I wonder how they measure the costs as most costs are included in phones plan.
This might mean if you buy a phone included on a plan they might reimburse all?

        • A friend of mine had a similar situation where she had a phone allowance which they were happy to pay monthly, but they wouldn’t pay for an outright phone. So they would always have to get phones on plans.

Only downside is if you leave then I guess you’re liable for the remainder of the contract?

Surprising they’re not providing a SIM at the very least though.. if they’re not transferring numbers it means everyone’s going to contact you (instead of them) after you leave. Not great for the company, potentially useful if you’re still in the same industry though!

          • @Innately Incognito: Hi Yoz, that is such a good point and is kind of weird - I hadnt thought of that. I'm working remotely but my new boss will be down tomorrow. I might raise that issue with him and then I might get a dual SIM phone for that reason. I dont want to get 2 phones but want that separation of business and personal

            • @podiacide:

might get a dual SIM phone for that reason.

Highly recommend the oneplus 7 pro then.

        • Probably wont pay for any of it. I'm their first remote worker so I dont think they have thought this whole thing through very well.
