Nick Scali - experiences with discounting?

Hi all, we would like to buy items from the Carlina collection at Nick Scali

Based on the prices we saw it's around $6k post discount for
- Dining table
- 6 chairs
- tv unit
- coffee table
- side table

Anyone have any advice regarding when/if NS has sales on during the year, or how to get a lower price (if even possible) based on your experiences?

Went to Belrose NS and the salesperson said "Sorry no further discounts ever if it's already discounted. Store policy"

Cheers all

Above link is a good indication.

      • Unfortunately last published deal was in 2016.

I've also been eyeing out some of their furniture in recent times and it appears they have the same sale prices week after week just with different sale names!

    • Thanks Sunny for the insight. Have you ever seen a sale that is 'the real deal?'

Gave them a ring, super helpful staff cheers for the heads up mate

FYI you can't negotiate prices with Nick Scali. They stick with whatever their ticket prices are.

You'll just have to look out for a good discount. The link above can provide a decent indication.

    • Cheers mate, the price I mention represent 20% off the ticket price

Given the above a 30% or 50% might be possible hey? Here's hoping…

      • If you wait I expect you’ll get a sale offering a bigger discount than 20%. We bought a lounge from them 18 months ago and waited until it was 40-50% off

        • That is helpful! Good to know such hefty discounts exist. :) Just chatted to a sales rep, they said only lounges get such large discounts, the items I looked at not so much. Will look into this further…

  • I can see why it's 6k, they do look expensive! Quite nice though.

    • Going to head in to ask what kind of wood it is next opportunity I get

  • Delivery and assembly costs looks like a killer too - anyone successfully managed to get that waived through negotiations?

    • I'd approach it from an 'total cost' point of view, like when you haggle on a car, you look at the drive away price. They can break the cost down in to what ever categories they like.

      • I'd totally want a full set of tyres, floor mats and a Half tank of Petrol for ~$6K

          You forgot the speed stripe.

The furniture looks nice, but there's nothing unique about it.

Have you had a look to see what alternatives are available at other stores or do you have your heart set on Nick Scali?

Polished marble slabs like that ones in the Carlina collection are actually quite cheap. I'd get a few quotes for local cabinet makes to see if they make something similar, although that can be a risk approach, since you can't see the finished product in front on you.

There's also a premium at Nick Scali, just because they called it "Italian Furniture". Take a look at some Chinese Furniture, instead. You might decide it's worth the cost saving or you might decide the italian is worth the premium.

    • Cheers Salmon, do you have any Chinese stores you can recommend?

Yes we've checked out all the big chains like Domayne, Fantastic, Freedom, IKEA etc

do you have any Chinese stores you can recommend?

I don't, but just visit any homemaker centre near you - Auburb, Artarmon, MoorePark, Liverpool (in NSW), etc. There's always a few in these shopping centres and if you drive around the surrounding streets, you'll find a few operating out of the warehouses nearby.

    • Why's everyone negging this? OP seems to be receptive to the suggestion.

@gazpacho We recently bought a new lounge suite and then later the 3 side table stack. As the others have said you need to keep an eye out on the sales. As long as your not in a hurry then it's to your advantage. There should be end of year sales if you can wait that long, but they always have at least a 20-50% sale on. Not all items are on sale.

We are in Melbourne and to save cost on the table we had to pick up from their warehouse. Like you cant pick up from the store.

Also as the furniture I think is make in India/China we had to wait 13 weeks for the sofa. Joke. They manufacture to order generally. Even the small tables we had to wait for weeks. No stock.

They will also try and sell you cleaning care kit. That's about $160, but you can try and negotiate on that.

So far we love the furniture. How long it will last and stay in good condition time will tell.

I would at least look for min 30% off. Their sale price is the sale price. No room to move and I think its the same price between stores.

Also, double-check your order. There's only like a 3 day grace period to change and it's better to have it all locked in on the day of the purchase so as theres no mix up in your order.

    • Thank you my friend, that is very helpful, especially the potential discount numbers, and the very long lead time. Have a nice night

  • I see a lot of ads on TV for NS “sales” eg. Spring sale, August sale, etc. Went to NS once and the sales rep put the hard sell on us saying the sale was only on once a year….yeah that’s because it was called the January sale…
They might not provide further discounts but they seem to have a sale on all the time.

one of the Scali family used to be a client. Asked for a discount on a leather lounge and got 5%
It's lasted pretty well though, nearly 20 years old and only real damage is one of the arm supports is busted inside, almost visually ok unless you know.

Yes the 'Italian Designed' furniture is made in China

  • Ordered a lounge 6 months ago, still hasn't arrive. They (Nick Scali) said that it will arrive in May, but it keeps getting delay. They advise it should now arrive in July.
They won't cancel the order and offer a full refund.
Can I take this to ACCC? Do I have a good chance of winning?

    • Bad luck , not sure what your chances are. Have bought from Nick Scali twice, got the goods on the promised date, guess I've been lucky so far…

  • Spent 7k on the vittorio lounge, with their ‘sale’, made in malaysia im told. No discounts given, not even a free leather care kit. Couldnt find anywhere else selling corner modern looking lounge with adjustable headrests and electric recliners. These that were, such as king living and gainsville were asking about 15k, albeit in italian leather.

Their sales are always on … SPRING SALE then extended another week … Then WINTER SALE ……. but are they realy sales …CONSUMER AFFAIRS …."""Showing a false "before" price next to a sale price. The "before" price must have been the price the goods were sold for in a reasonable period prior to the sale.
The "before" price must also have applied to a reasonable number of sales before the sale started""

Have seen the same leather lounge suite on sale in Melbourne for the past 2 sales.. If the SALES run concurrently when are they on sale for the before price….
Might be a question to ask before you buy.

  • All of NS furniture is just customised for them and made for cheap from one of the many major manufacturers in China.
Throw a slick advertising campaign to make it look luxurious and 'european' with minimal discounting = $$$ profits
    Its all smoke & mirros.
