How to Copy a Garage Remote for Apartment Block

My partner and I have 1 parking space we would like to share in the apartment block we currently rent in. We only have 1 garage remote so that makes it rather difficult logistically. Before we ask the landlord/body corp who will either say:

  1. No

  2. Yes but we will charge you a ridiculous amount for it…

Does anyone know how we can duplicate the one we have? I'm not sure if there are things like universal tv remotes you simply program.

Thanks in advance.

Mister Minit can copy almost any remote. https://misterminit.co/keys-remotes/remotes/

    • I tried this once when a friend of mine lived in an apartment block and I could use the space.
We coded a remote via Mister Minute or similar and the remote did not work.
Something to do with how the codes generate and change at each use.
But maybe things are different now or a different system might not be as secure as the apartment block my friend lived in.

    • Thanks. Do you have an idea on price?

you wont be able to as the code will be a rolling setup, you cant just clone the code out of your current remote as the codes constantly change.
The garages control unit needs to be in programming mode, which I dare say you would not get access to.
You will end up having to request one from the body corp and probably around the $120/$150 mark, although for a rental they may retain ownership,
so perhaps once you move out they could consider refunding a portion of the cost to you. Or perhaps they would absorb the cost considering they may retain ownership of the remote.

If you ask the LL / BC you'll probably funds it the answer is no as well as you are not allowed to share/sub let the space.

I had a similar issue, checked the model of the opener and bought one off ebay for less than $10

in my previous experience, you need access to the motor because you need to put it into programming mode. I bought one from the guys at remotepro.com.au, op should send them a photo of the motor and the fob and they'll advise

  • For security reasons you should not be able to clone the remote, otherwise any previous tenant could do the same resulting in a black market for remotes? In my apartment building the remote is swapped over every 6 months, probably a change to the frequency.

  • Practically all of the modern remotes use rolling codes so it would be impossible to 'clone' an existing remote. But if you have access to the garage door controller you will be able to add a new remote (which you can buy from the manufacturer or may be even from eBay). Provided you have access then lookup the model number of the gate controller and you will be able to find programming instructions quite easily.

    • correct.
You can get a cheap remote from ebay or Kogan (if the model is compatible with your controller).
I've done this this a few times now.

  • If it's using the rolling code, then you may be able to get the receiver into pairing mode if you have access to it (ie next to the garage door motor), otherwise body corp will probably charge you $150

If it's the older dipswitch style then just open the old remote and see which switches are in the 0 or 1 position and buy the same remote and set the switches. I found these remotes tended to cost more like $50 on ebay vs the $5 rolling code ones fyi

  • I had the same issue.

You need to know if it has DIP switches or electronic rolling code. Also what frequency (mHz) it works on.

The frequency and partno should be on the remote. Try googling it.

Mine was no longer obtainable from the manufacturer. After much searching and an incorrect purchase I got one (and eventually another 2) from AliExpress for $20 each. Much better than the $200 that the strata manager wanted for an additional security key.

Post a photo if you can

  • Late to this thread.
    New to this problem.

Has anyone had any updates or success?

I have a legitimate use I’m no dodgy mofo.
We have 1 spot in our apartment. We don’t always have time to pass the remote to one another.
We asked for an additional remote but it’s very expensive and will only provide one upon deactivating our existing remote.
    So it’s just painful.

  • So I lost my friend’s gate remote and need to replace it. 1- I do not have a remote to see any numbers it may have, or to find out its model, so I guess I will have to check the motor for all information regarding it. And 2- can I do this myself, without getting any professionals involved, to save me the financial grief they will most certainly throw upon me?
