SAP job prospects

My company has given me an opportunity to pursue a path in SAP. It will involve the largest ERP project in the country/world involving SAP.

What are the job prospects in SAP? Heard that it is a very lucrative career with a very high entry barrier (graduate roles are never advertised for SAP). What do I need to look out for when considering to pursue this career path?

Many thanks!

  • Which version and module of ERP you will be working on? HANA is hot word in SAP World atm…..

    • The organisation is implementing HANA. It’s a large project and came up in news recently.

  • I recommend it if you have an interest in SAP or ERP in general. A good SAP consultant is very well paid. HANA is the next big thing..

  • Make sure you are getting trained in S4Hana otherwise SAP ERP is end of life in 2025. You might get work looking after end of life systems though.

    They SAP your money..

  • I work on a competing product to SAP (a much smaller one, at least outside of the EU) as a solutions architect & business systems analyst. I'm about to jump onto an opportunity with another 'competing' product.

It probably depends what exactly you will be doing but experience in enterprise business process can open opportunities across many areas for you going forward that are not limited to one system. SAP consultancy pays well, but experience in SAP is not hard to come by. Experienced Finance users for example often transition over to consultancy. Experienced payroll consultants are much harder to come by.

Also - If it's your company that is planning an implementation of SAP HANA, just be comfortable that they are not being tight asses about it as poorly financing these sorts of projects is what leads to user resentment.

I would say look outside the square a bit. Instead of what are the job prospects in SAP, ask what are the job prospects in business process. The answer to that is… plenty :) It's a HUGE market and there are many opportunities out there! Many buzz words exist in ERP now - AI, enterprise PSA and so on.

    • Thanks! It’s for a large federal government. They are implementing S4/HANA.

      • Can you say on which OS? I guess 95% of the SAP stuff runs on SUSE.

      • Well.. if I were you - I'd absolutely take this opportunity. I love what I do which is essentially provide solutions for problems. I love the challenge of it.

It will likely be a baptism of fire, but if you like to be challenged, bloody well go for it :)
