USB-C to HDMI That Will Work With My Laptop

My laptop is the following: HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13-ae092TU
Specs can be found here: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c05966629

I've looked on OzBargain, eBay, and Amazon but keep reading the same mixed reviews of "some work with some laptops but not others". Where I'm stuck is finding one that will definitely work and is not too expensive. Can anyone help?

  • Your USB-C needs to support DisplayPort alt mode, looking at the specs below your safe as it supports DP1.2

External ports: 2 Thunderbolt™ 3 (Data Transfer up to 40 Gb/s, Power Delivery, DP1.2, HP Sleep and Charge); 1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (HP Sleep and Charge); 1 headphone/microphone combo

    • Cheers! So when I look for one online, do I just need to look for anything with DP1.2? Or am I looking specifically for Thunderbolt 3?

  • when I went through this JB hifi were kind enough to allow me to try the different adaptors they had I just took my laptop in, turned out the Microsoft one ended up being most reliable for me.

The biggest issue was the 4k standard most would only play at 30fps where the Microsoft one was pushing 60fps no hassle the different chipsets can have different impacts on the tv output for the HDCP version if it doesn't like it or enumerate properly during the handshake it drops streaming lower to 720p in some cases

    • Good to know. Unfortunately, no JB near where I live but I'll try Good Guys or bring my laptop with me next time I'm in Melbourne.

  • I have used this with a few different laptops and it has always worked well:
