Best Hybrid Bike for under $350?

Hi y'all

What's a good place to buy a budget bike, need it for on-Road (going to shops, exercise) and off road (light trails ie, national park trails).
Need the best value where i get the best quality for the price
Here are a few places i thought of, but not sure if they're good.
*Decathlon
*Kmart
*Big W
*Target
*Aldi
Any more ideas, or suggestions?

What exactly do you mean by ‘off road MTB’? Take flar fire trails or proper single track tough mtb trails? If you want to ride proper mtb style, tou will need to buy a mountain bike and not a hybrid. Typically hybrid bikes are suited for gravel paths and nothing tougher. Get a 29er hardtail for best efficiency on the road.

A new bike for $350 is not going to be any good for off road work, unless you can get hold of the $349 ALDI mountain bike that was avaaible recently. They were great value but sold out really quickly.

Please don’t buy a bike from Kmart, big w etc. They aren’t really worth it, you’d be much better spending the same on a second hand quality bike. The exception is the ALDI bikes around the $350 mark, they are very good value.

Decathlon seem to have ok bikes, but only at their sale price. This is similar to anaconda. Anaconda RRP for their bikes are very high prices, but when they (always) are on sale at 40-60% less than RRP they are reasonable value.

$350 is a healthy budget to get something second hand for $200 and spend some on maintenance or parts.

  • I bought Decathlon Riverside 500, very happy with it.
But I am an occasional users

  • Slightly moot question given getting one of the Aldi ones is difficult. This will almost certainly conclude that the Aldi is the best and you can't get one.

  • Hybrid Bike (is a Flat Bar road bike) is not a Mountain Bike.

Typically Hybrids are much like Road Bikes but instead of the Drop Bar you have flat bar handles and a slightly more comfortable geometry as you are more upright. Hybrids also have thinner tyres like road bikes (700c) and Mountain Bikes have fatter tyres (26 x 1.75 - 2.25)

    Which do you want?

    • Yeah i'm not sure…
Would a mountain bike work on the road?

      • Of course mtb works on the road. They are just a bit less efficient (slower). You can also ride a road bike off road, but of the two options using a mountain bike in the road is much better than a road bike off it.

Hybrids aren't great off road. They aren't really great anywhere IMO

NB: Some cheap MTBs are not warranted for use off road.

  • You should maybe hire or try before buying.
Bikes are funny, most don't feel right until you find a style, size and the adjustments to suit you.

I still pick up old, good quality bikes (latest are $1200/20yo super-light, and $800/8yo hybrid) from the curbside, council white-goods rubbish collection, and fix them in an hour or two.
Maybe borrow or buy 2ndhand, a couple of types to see what you like before going to a retail shop to typically be talked into a $1200 job you may not like or use.

Start with crap and work your way up.
