Advice for Trip to South America for Carnival

Hey all.
Heading to South America in February.
Going to Machu Picchu and then on to Rio for Carnival. Can anyone recommend any worthwhile day trips from Rio? Looking at stopping in at Iguazu Falls on the way. Are they worth it? How long should allow to stay at Cusco for? Any and all advice/ tips gladly received. Thanks.

Don't keep much cash on you in case you're robbed, but also keep cash on you for bribing the officials

    🙂

    • No idea why the above was downvoted. It's bloody good advice and true.

  • A couple of nights in Cusco, so you can take few day tours like the Sacred Valley.
Try the cuy (conejillo de indias) so you can freak out your Aussie mates after eating guinea pig :-)
    (It's like over-cooked rabbit, BTW)

The train trip to Aquas Calientes and then the bus trip to Machu Picchu are fantastic.

Benn there a few times on business and it's safe and no bribes needed.

    • Apparently due to us being there in off peak the train is only half the distance, with the first 2.5hrs on a bus. I hate buses but unfortunately not much choice.

There is a small airport near iguana falls in Paraguay that is dirt cheap to fly in and out from if it helps in any way

    Cuidad el esta or similar

    • I'm actually surprised at the high cost of airfares in South America, plus due to being there at Carnival time, all fares are basically double out of Rio.

      • You can Add extra legs to your flights, they often turn out cheaper in s.a.

That airport btw will fly via ascunsionn to where u wanna go more than likely

    • Cuidad el esta looks interesting for a non touristic look.

    Come back alive

  • How much do all the vaccinations for Brazil cost?

  • A mate travelled to carnaval several years back. It was only after he got to fourth did he realise she was a he - be on guard.

    • Going with my daughter so there won't be too much Lou Reed stuff going on.
