Best Golf Club Set for ~$750?

Hey all,
Just wondering if any golfing experts can point me in the right direction for my first set of clubs.
Looking to spend no more than $750.
Not really interested in the really cheap kits as I have heard poor things about their performance and reliability.
Any help is appreciated.

  • I have bought clubs in the past around that mark, and went a good second hand set of PING clubs. So suggestion would be look near new, get a good set

  • I think it's worth getting fitted, or at least getting a swing analysis ($150). That way you can work out the type of shaft/head/clubs you like.
From there go and find a good second hand set.

I got some second hand Mizuno's, and they are amazing. Taylormade/Callaway/Cobra etc all have entry sets (around $900-1000), but IMO the entry sets are pretty cheap and crappy. Better off getting some good second hand, slightly older. If you can convince a facebook seller to meet you at the driving range/let you have a round for deposit, that would be good.

  • +1

Buy used, not cheap new for that price.

I picked up mizuno MP58 irons, mizuno T11 wedges, taylormade rescue clubs, and callaway driver for $400 total approx 2 years ago.

Only now that I'm in low 80s scoring am I really considering changing it up a bit to get fit and change some of my gapping.

  • What’s your skill level?

If you’re a complete beginner and just want to get into the game, buying a somewhat new second hand set is going to be much better value than the cheaper sets.

If you want to buy something new, I doubt there is any point on getting fitted at that price point so I’d just look on gumtree, marketplace etc and do your research on what’s available.

  • Hi, I might be in your situation when I started.

    Some tips:
    * Do you have a favourite pro player? If yes, find out what brand he/she uses then consider starting with this brand. In my case, it was Phil Mickelson so I started with Callaway.
    * Consider the main brands - Titleist, Callaway, Taylormade, Ping, Cleveland, Odyssey (for putters).
    * Next find a second hand set that might be two-three years old. The latest year's model will be expensive.
    * Look in eBay, gumtree, facebook marketplace, pawnshops. If you are lucky you will find the unwanted gifts or sets that were used once (I got a 2 yr old model at the time for $500).
    * Find out the model and year of release of the set you are buying. There are lots of sets on sale that are sets from 15-20 years ago (try not to get these).
    * Once you are ready to upgrade, you can always sell your first set and because it is branded, it will have a reasonable resale value.

    Then:
    * Watch videos of your favourite player on Youtube. If he/she has intructional videos then great. Copy his/her pre-shot routine. You can always personalise it later.
    * Get a 1:1 session with a Pro even for a minimum of one session.

    Enjoy and have fun!

    Warning:
    * Starting with a brand might force you to buy all the related branded-accessories (ball, clothing, towel, etc). :-)
