Credit Card Offer to Spend $6000 to Meet Bonus Requirement

I opened this post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/474622 last time for ideas to quickly spend a few hundred dollars to meet the bonus requirement. Thanks for all the ideas and I ended up purchasing a few hundred dollars worth of gift cards as thats the quickest.

Now I have applied a new CC but this time it requires a spending of $6000 by Jan next year. Since there are still a few months, I guess I can have more options this time. I know for sure my daily expenses won't be enough and buying GCs that amount would just take ages for me to use. Otherwise any good idea?

Seems there is extra 1.5% or something using CC to pay for those?

  • Christmas is around the corner… Your credit card might be handy. I would say to try to pay bills upfront if possible, stock on gift card for you groceries and maybe if you go out with friends or families, pay the bill for everyone with your credit card and ask them to pay you back with cash ? Or transfer ?

I've heard people use the book a fully refundable hotel in the future than once bonus points are paid. You refund the transactions.

that or airline seats (i.e fully flexible business class)

      • Does it work if the card is closed by then? e.g. got the bonus, redeemed, closed, go refund, where would the money go?

step 1: buy the seats (book for 12+months away)
          step 2: wait for points
step 3: once points are in your account, issue refund
step 4: close CC (if you prefer to)

          • @sw0rdy: Your points might disappear if you get a refund!

  • Which card did you apply for?

You can pay my bills :)

  • Use a payment provider that deposits to your bank account… rinse and repeat
Other variations of the above including other credit cards or the card in question
Will cost 1.5% but could argue this is offset by the 6000 reward points

    1. Buy Phone/camera/other small, high value item from JB with the credit card
    2. Wait a week
    3. Return unopened item to a different JB store
    4. Produce debit card when doing the refund.
    5. Transfer cash from refund to your mortgage offset, then wait
    6. On the date your card is due, pay credit card to avoid penalty interest
    • Haha, how to do step 4?

      • Hope you get someone daft processing your return. Could get away with it at Costco as they don’t ever check I believe, but if you tried this at DJs, they would just give you a gift card for the value of the item if you didn’t have your original card

  • Pay upfront your bill then switch to a different provider they can refund the over payment to your bank

  • If you have health insurance extras that you use regularly then instead of using your health insurance card, pay the full amount on your credit card for any services you receive. Then claim back manually from your health insurer and get them to pay it into your bank account.

  • If you have private health insurance, prepay it up to a year in advance.

Or prepay mobile / internet bills in advance.
