eBay vs Amazon: which one to buy from?

Dear ozbargainers

I noticed that most of the items on Amazon are from third-party vendors.

The postage is not necessarily cheap either.

Then I look on Ebay, and find the same items for about the same price and postage.

On eBay, I can pay with PayPal.

I used to be think that Amazon was safer, but I am not so sure anymore.

So for the same item and same cost, which one would you buy from?

    Amazon.

    Better tracking of packages.
    Higher cashback*
    Prime > eBay Plus.
Prime gives free shipping, usually on non-prime things as well

    *for most categories

    • Amazon.

      Better tracking of packages.

Nope, these pricks used fastway couriers and lost my package. No thank you at all.

Actually yeah I agree when they don't use auspost it's horrible. Toll for me has been hell

      • I've had packages go missing through eBay too.

  • In terms of safety, I think it's pretty good either way. You'll get your item or a refund with either marketplace.
With both places, it's best to check out the seller's feedback.
As SnowDragon has pointed out, cashback is often higher at Amazon though eBay sometimes allows you to use coupons.
There is occasionally discounted eBay gift cards from various places while I've never seen Amazon gift cards to be discounted.

  • Amazon because of boxes and well protected .

Would go Ebay if the same price as immediate discount with codes and giftcards instead of relying on CB companies with major tracking problems that may appear or not ready to withdraw 3 mths down the track .

    Both lol :)

    Whoever is cheaper.

  • Only buy from amazon if amazing them selves are shipping it.

    • Hi, so if Amazon 3rd Party-shipped is basically like eBay - Who has better 3rd party buyer protection?

      Thanks.

(Seeing if I should switch up 2 and 3.

      My rule of thumb currently:
      1. Amazon/AU/Global?
      2. eBay stores
      3. Amazon 3rd Party
      4. Local B&M retailer… JB HiFi etc.
      5. Online 3rd party stores:
      6. Intl/Chinese/Grey websites)

  • Amazon because Prime items usually come very quickly. eBay is usually cheaper for the exact same thing though, but it shows up two weeks from when you order it. Sometimes eBay stuff takes so long to arrive that if it didn't show I wouldn't even realise because I'd forgotten about it.

Whoever is cheaper, but if they're about the same, then ebay.

Over 200 ebay transactions, never had an issue which wasn't resolved (as a buyer).
Out of about 10 transactions on amazon, 2 have been refunded due to their (profanity) ups.

If given a choice I would always prefer to buy from Amazon for their quick shipping, fantastic packaging and most importantly hassle-free returns. However, if the product I am purchasing is a branded one and if the price on eBay is comparatively lower then yes I wouldn't mind eBay because I'm already up for it.

I usually buy all the cheap Chinese products from eBay like screen protectors, phone case, charging cables etc.

    • most importantly hassle-free returns

is it true you just leave it outside the front for the courier to collect?

  • Amazon, most of the crap now in eBay is drop shipped from China, even though it says Australia. Got a screwdriver from Japan from Amazon with free shipping in a week the other day, pretty impressive.

  • I'm rarely able to find what I want on Amazon, but when I have been able to the experience has been very fast and easy. Haven't had many issues with eBay either in almost 200 purchases apart from one item damaged by the Global Shipping Program, for which I was refunded by eBay, so overall not an entirely bad experience, and one case of being sent the wrong item.
