Vinomofo: Mule Chardonnay - $180 Dozen ($15 Per Bottle - RRP $42), $9ish Delivery or Pickup Port Melbourne Free

90
VINO

This is a wine made by Innocent Bystander and Giant Steps winery. It is a bit more austere than their Giant Steps Chardonnay but you aren’t paying $40ish a bottle. It is also worth looking at the Mule Cab Sav whilst you are at it. We’ve got the Shiraz, from the Innocent Bystander barrel haul sales in the past, and it is great as well but they don’t have it at Vinomofo at the moment. BTW - If you can get onto the Innocent Bystander barrel haul sales they are worth going to. We got the Giant Steps Syrah for $16 a bottle last time.

If you are a new client the VINO gives you $15 off dozen price. This should work for any dozen of their wines.

Tasting notes -
Think white peach, grapefruit, citrus and a gentle background toastiness for depth

    • I’m not trying to get referral credits. Sorry if I misunderstand your posting. I just got the $15 off the price.

I’ve seen some hopeless wine websites and this one has to be up there with the worst. What’s their plan? I’m b#ggered if I know. This is a classic case, no pun intended, of buying a pig in a poke.

What, exactly, are your issues? If you go into a wine shop you are buying off how pretty the label is; unless you know the wine.

They have a returns policy, in case you don’t like the pig.

Their plan is to offer a small (compared to DM and many others) selection of wines, convince you it's a good deal, sell out quickly as many lines as they can, get new ones, rinse and repeat. Also more recently, a raft of direct imports where it is often difficult to compare prices.

It's actually worked quite well so far, in a few years they have accumulated more customers than Cellarmasters has in 20 or more years.

If you visit the right websites, most mystery deals are usually identified within half an hour of the email landing, some are good deals, some are deals with hyper-inflated RRP so they can claim huge discounts (as do some other etailers).

But their returns policy is second to none, fast arrangement of collection of any wine you don't like and instant credit on pick-up.

If you do your homework, it's a pretty safe process.

Seriously, most people I know have a lot better things to do with their time than buy proverbial pigs, hope they’re genuine porkers worth the price attached to them, then find they’re not up to scratch and then go through the process of returns, waiting for credits and the rest of the never ending story.

    • In my case the “mule” is one I know and have bought previously. Most people who walk into a wine shop, or even a restaurant, have only a vague idea what they are purchasing. I got “into” Oceans Eight Pinot Gris by ordering a glass at a restaurant. If you don’t venture out of safe ground you never try anything new. Also, most new things you try don’t have a returns policy. BTW, Your friends sound dull.

    • I've just checked my order history, over 200 orders since April 2012 and about 15 returns.

Some of the buys are for myself, many of them for quaffer packs I make up for friends who are very happy with the wines and prices. I never buy the mystery deals unless I know what it is, it's mostly easy to work out if you have the right resources.

I'm still drinking some of the early buys, including some lovely Central Otago Pinot Noirs bought at very good prices.

People who spend little time choosing what to buy, wandering Dan Murphy aisles looking for pretty labels are missing out on a world of good deals on good wines from Vinomofo and a wide range of other good wine merchants who don't sell own-label crap.

And unlike many other merchants, the Vinomofo returns process is fast and painless, one email, Aus Post calls to pick up within a few days, another email to notify collection and the credit goes into your account immediately - or a bit longer if you want a refund.
