Gaming Console for 7 years old?

Hi All
I'm looking to buy a gaming console for my 7 year old kid I have no idea what to choose between the Xbox or PlayStation 4 pro. I heard PlayStation 4 pro is good because of its 4K graphics however I'm just wondering if there are games that are interactive for the kids especially if I buy a PS4 camera with it?
any suggestions

    Nintendo switch.

    Many more age appropriate games.

      This.
In fact, a Wii U is also a good, cheaper option with a decent library of games (Wii + Wii U games) and much more age appropriate titles compared to Xbox and PlayStation.
Unless OP was looking for something to use himself getting a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X is kind of pointless as the kid will not care about 4K graphics.

get an og Wii for $30 for the 7 year old and get a ps4 for yourself.
I had original PS4, and now the slim, its really quiet. PS5 comes out Christmas next year and it will have backwards compatibility and be better than the pro anyway.
PS4 slim over xbox, just based on exclusives. I prefer the xbox console though, you can run kodi and vlc etc on it

  • The camera on its own is a pretty dead peripheral outside of just dance but rabbids is meant to be really good and for that age group

    Alien: Isolation
    Angry Birds Star Wars
    Bacon Butthole Army
    Baila Latino
    Commander Cherry's Puzzled Journey
    FIFA 15, 16 and 17
    Just Dance 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019
    LittleBigPlanet 3
    NBA 2K15, 2K16, and 2K17
    Omega Quintet
    The Playroom
Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show
    SHAREfactory
    Singstar
    Surgeon Simulator
    Tearaway Unfolded
    Until Dawn
    War Thunder

Playstation is the absolute worst choice you could make for a kid that age. You can find the original Wii for dirt cheap which has lots of interactive games. You could go the Switch route. Or you could go Xbox, it's backwards compatibility means it has access to hundreds and hundreds of older really cheap games, plus the controllers are far superior to the others and comfortable to use.

    • The Xbox One is only backwards compatible with selected 360 titles.
I've found the Wii U pro controller to be pretty good (quite similar to Xbox's design). I assume the Switch Pro is even better.

    • better controller is subjective, but xbox control is better for bigger hands, so not better for a 7yr old. Xbox doesn't have many good games even if you go backwards compatible.

My advice for buying consoles for kids is to find out what his mates play… The console you think he should have is useless if his mates all play on a different platform. If that doesn't apply then buy something you both can play… Who you play with is more important that what you play on..

  • Thanks, so switch or Wii?

The Switch will cost you ~$300 for lite or ~$400 for full model. Games will be on the expensive side (>$50 each).
The Wii is dirt cheap costing <$50, games will be really cheap too.
The Wii U is a middle ground ~$120 for the console, games will be mostly under $30 each. (The Wii U can also run Wii games).

I recommend the Wii U, games don't look too aged and are much cheaper than the Switch's.

        I agree.
Also two other things to consider:

Many of the Switch games are re-releases of WiiU games. They look and play very similarly but are MUCH cheaper on WiiU now.

The WiiU can play any Wii game, so buying a WiiU gives you access to all the Wii games as well. Many are still great.

Just keep in mind that you will probably have to buy most of your WiiU and Wii games from Gumtree.

I would go for a switch. Newer is better in many aspects.

Around 5 years ago during a family thing at mums place I pulled my old N64 out of storage for my cousins kids, probably around 7-12 years old or so.

Fired up smash bros, could barely see what was going on in the blurry screen and wondered how I used to play it and felt kinda bad for thinking the kids might like this old stuff.

They loved it, didn't hear from them for hours. The old quality didn't bother them at all.

Also seen a mate set up a retropi arcade, basically an old joystick arcade setup with emulators with heaps of old games. Basically every game up to the SNES era. At a party a few of the adults wanted to play the old games of their youth (myself included) but couldn't get a turn because of the young kids hogging it all night.

Kinda seems like kids might not mind older games that much. Latest and greatest might not be needed, and you might do well to pick up an old Wii or something before they start wanting the newest stuff.

  • Consider a cheap or old mobile phone.

My kids watch youtube kids on long car drives, or play the free games like angry birds and bloons td etc

I discourage the use of close up game consoles as they are bad for the eyes (you eyes have to work hard to focus as short distances) and posture. Much better using a TV at a distance.

    Raspberry pi.

For 7 year old me I would have loved a PS4.
I don't remember being shocked but adult games.

I have both Xbox and PS4. Xbox had game pass so you don't have to buy games but PS4 I prefer as a system. It's instant on is far better then Xbox.

No one has mentioned "New 2ds" which has a huge library of great games. Wii, WiiU, Switch also good choices

We bought one of these for our 7 year old, it has most of the old consoles including Nintendo 64 with Mario Karts. Works great, so small and compact as well and our 7 year old knows how to turn it on/off and get going easily.

RetroPie Game Console + KODI | RetroPi Raspberry Pi 3

Before the one above we bought one of these below:

Mini Vintage Retro TV Game Console Classic Built-in 620 Games for NES EU TV Game
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-Vintage-Retro-TV-Game-Conso…

Our 4 and 7 years olds both play on this one and it has some great games for kids.

  • Wii or wiiU for sure

  • Get a wii or switch. I remember being like 10 years old and I got a playstation and went straight into the strip club in GTA it ruined me for life
