Aquarium (Fish) products

Thinking of setting up an aquarium at home.

I just got given a fish tank, but need to get heaps of stuff (e.g. thermometer, test kits etc).

Anyone know of any cheap online stores? or stores near Brunswick, VIC?

thanks

  • This is a good site(online)
GuppyOnline: Good site to buy equipment
LiveFish: Good site to buy fish

    Visit these forums
    AquariumLife

The forum(i'm also apart of this), is good, has heaps of info, you can buy and sell, etc

  • Thanks mate. I just signed up to AquariumLife and put you down (issh) as a referrer.

Have you used RENA SmartHeaters before? thinking of getting one cos I just broke my glass heater

    • haha thanks

Have you used RENA SmartHeaters before?

Nope, I am currently using a 200W AquaOne heater for my 4ft Tank

But people say that Eheim/Jager is the best

  • Guppy is cheap, but shipping is by courier from qld.
thereefshop.com.au ships from melbourne, and has some good prices too.
www.aquariumsupermarket.com.au has some cheap FW products - ebay store.

  • Different places for different stuff - p&h costs make a big difference.

Guppys is good, as is livefish.com.au.

    I also use www.aquariumproducts.com.au

Haven't used www.aquariumsupermaket.com.au, but they've got the 300 watt jager heater on sale (http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/). Apparently the jager heaters are more efficient, so you can use a lower watt heater.

  • try pets1.com.au or google age of aquarium

  • +1

Read up on how to properly cycle your tank.. that is the most critical thing when starting a new tank, otherwise you'll just have tons of dead fish :)

Normally you would buy a test kit and monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels each day, and do small water changes to keep the levels of ammonia and nitrite getting to high = dead fish.

The best advice I can give you is to buy some hardy fish for the cycling process, white cloud minnows, guppies and molies are pretty cheap. Only buy a few, and perhaps use a product like Stability - which will keep the ammonia and nitrite levels down during cycling.

It's best to buy a test kit anyway, it's the only scientific method of testing for ammonia, no ammonia = cycle complete & then you can start to add fish (1 or 2 at a time).

  • Thanks guys.

You guys sure know your stuff

The sites quoted are great. Been trying to find the RENA SmartHeater 50W or 100W, but seems to be unavailable, which is a bummer.

Anyway, I'll keep looking and I might get some other stuff from those sites.

    thanks again

  • I don't know anything about the pricing relative to other stores but I know the Coburg Aquarium on Bell St, Coburg (http://www.coburgaquarium.com.au/) has a LOT of people in there every weekend. Perhaps the crowd just means they're families buying little Timmy a goldfish, or perhaps it means they're well-priced.

I don't think I've seen a larger fish room in other stores around Melbourne but it's admittedly been over a decade since I owned fish and the market may have changed. I mention this store primarily because you were asking for stores near Brunswick.

  • I forgot to mention, these guys usually have pretty good pricing, and delivery is a flat $7.50 for any size order.
