3 Month Old Moto Scooter Breaks down - What to Do?

I have a 3 month old scooter with approx 1300km, rode to work today, rode to another work location, back to my office. Tried to turn it on to ride home, and she won’t start!!

I’ve never had a new vehicle break down… who’s responsibility is it? I’ve had to get an Uber home, and either get an Uber / public transport back to the office tomorrow to try my alternate key (scooter has immobiliser / keyless start)

If all that fails - who’s responsibility is it to get it back to the dealer for investigation/ repair?

All a bit of an inconvenience really!

  • does your dealer warranty policy includes roadside assists plus "towing" ?

    • Doesn’t mention unfortunately

      • i guess you'll have to airtasker a ute taxi

        • Wow, that’s crazy!

Fair enough - seems nuts that you have to go to that effort and expense when under warranty 😬

    My condolences.

I've had to tow my motorbike once after I slipped and it couldn't start. It was like $500 for 15km?
As per the above, I think it would be cheaper to use air tasker.

Hopefully you are not too far from the mechanic.

    Good luck.

Buy NRMA roadside assistance? If they can’t start it for you than they will tow it.

    • Do you have roadside assistance for all of your vehicles, or do you pay per vehicle? I have a scooter and a car registered in my name, I do pay for roadside assistance through NRMA already. Dunno if it’s just for my car though?

EDIT - looks like it’s per vehicle :(

Paying for an additional vehicle may be cheaper than paying somebody else to come and look at it or to tow it for you.

Similar thing happened to my scooter after 6 months. I just called the dealership, explained what happened, and they arranged for the scooter to be picked up and fixed.
This was about 10 years ago so can't remember what was wrong with it.
I think it had a 2 year warranty.

  • I am guessing its not a new Yamaha or Honda?

    • 2019 Honda PCX150

Call Honda they will most likely trouble shoot with you, If it can't be fixed they will send some one out.

You should get decent service from Honda.

        Could it be the battery?

        • Yeah I’ll see how I go with the guys I bought it from, otherwise I’ll give Honda a call.

It could be the immobiliser remote, so I’ll take the spare to the office tomorrow and try it.

Could be the battery, not sure! Seems crazy after 3-4months though

@geoffs87: Id be really surprised if its a major issue, Honda's are generally bullet proof. I say the battery as its small and maybe the lights stayed on for some reason.

            • @aussieprepper: Unfortunately didnt get decent service from Honda, told me to call the dealer for support, and weren't the slightest bit interested in helping me get the scooter to the dealer. I can lodge a request to apply for compensation later though… so that's something!

Interestingly i just spoke with the dealer who sold me my car, and they confirmed during the warranty term they will come pick it up!

  • Will it crank or nothing at all?

    • Nah when I turn the control knob (not sure why it’s called) around to the start spot, the dash doesn’t even light up - no way to even try to ignite!

      • +1

Nothing at all sounds like either the battery is dead (most likely) or the kill switch has been hit (some bikes this switch knocks all power out, some it only stops ignition, but lights and dash still work.)

If you have nothing, no lights, no dash, no clicking, no indicators, it is more than likely a battery issue. Taking the spare key to work may not help.

Call the place you bought it from and ask them about what you should do and you cant move it because it's dead and they may be able to assist.

        • Yeah weirdly the scooter allows me to turn the knob to the unlock spot, the ring around it lights up and it allows me to open the seat and fuel door, which you can’t do if the immobiliser isn’t nearby… so it’s all a bit weird!

Yeah I’ll try my other key tomorrow, and if no dice call the dealer back. I’m sure it will all be fine

You’ll just have to leave it there and walk from now on.

Or you could talk to the dealer you bought it from and find out what they might do to help.

    • Haha… Nice.

Yeah I spoke to the dealer today, they suggested I try my other key and go from there… just looking to the community for broader advice, as I’ve never experienced a breakdown in a new vehicle before!

      • The advice is: contact the dealer first.

It would be very uncommon for a dealer to pay for ‘pain and suffering’ like Uber fees but they should be able to assist getting the vehicle fixed by either having a mechanic visit or arranging towing to a workshop.

      • Did you ask them if the tow will be covered under warranty?

        • Nah figured I’d try the spare key first. Still yet to get a chance to go downstairs to check it out :)

You should know these things… why contact us… ring the dealer… ring your insurer

    • +1

      ring your insurer

WTF for?? What is an insurer going to do here? Unless OP's bike isn't starting because it's wedged up under the front of a car, I doubt they will care.

    • Didnt contact you mate… asked on a forum in case someone has experience or knowledge… you know, i thought that was what forums were for?

Called dealer, by the time i could look into it, after hours so couldn't get back in touch with them until today.

Spoken with Honda and dealer today, all said getting scooter to dealer is my responsibility - yet calling ACCC says return costs for bulky goods is at the cost of the person who sold to you… so I'm at odds, hence reaching out to the community in case anyone has any experience…

What will my insurer do? Haha.

Thanks for your interest in my situation however.

I had a motorbike that broke the belt drive about 20km from home. I pushed it all the way home. Even got stopped by the cops riding it down an incline but when they realised it was disabled I was free to go. I got it about halfway home on day 1, caught pt home and then back again to continue pushing it the next day.

If you're with racv it includes free towing up to a limited distance

  • I am with national motorcycle alliance which has a roadside assistance fee of $50 which includes two call outs for an year and will tow the vehicle for 25kms in cities and 50kms in regional areas. The warranty should cover the battery or any mechanical damage but you would still need to get them at the dealership though.
