Do check travel warnings before booking. Peru, Venezuela and Ecuador are in political turmoil right now.

I wouldn’t say Peru is currently as dangerous as Ecuador, and Ecuador certainly isn’t as dangerous as Venezuela.

      • +1

No ranking order implied. Dissolution of congress and corruption charges and detainment of Alberto and Keiko Fujimori qualify as political turmoil in my books.

Oct 2nd - "LIMA, Peru — President Martín Vizcarra dissolved Congress. Congress suspended Vizcarra. So who’s running Peru now?
Peruvians woke Tuesday to find their country in political turmoil after late-night moves left the executive and the opposition arguing over which side was in charge."

Must be really weird in Venuzuela right now with their economy half what it was in 2013.

    • Had planned to go to Peru and Ecuador in April/May next year… might have to sit tight and see before booking flights.

As a Colombian, I say that Peru and Ecuador are safe countries to visit, I couldn't say the same about Venezuela.
I understand there is political turmoil at the moment…. there is always political turmoil in South America. This is part of their everyday life.

  • mmmmh… i check some flights within the dates but it was more like$1700 return…

  • I was able to find $1049 from Sydney to Santiago in May-June earlier today. Probably selling fast

    • i started checking at 8.00am this morning well before receiving the email but i couldnt find anything.. lucky you

      • what days are you looking? I have found plenty at $1049

        • i tried random dates within the validity time (with return before the 16th or whatever).

When is says depart before 16.06, does that mean your flight back could be AFTER that date?

          Thanks for the link

Just be careful with the visa fees, last time was like 140USD.

    • Australian tourists do not require a visa but will need to pay a “reciprocity fee’ when arriving into into Chile through Santiago International Airport.

This “reciprocity fee’ of US$117 does not need to be pre-arranged and will be payable at the airport in cash or credit card. (Please ensure this is paid for before you collect your luggage.) This fee is valid for 90 days.

Australian tourists do not need a visa to visit Peru for stays of up to 6 months. It is not possible to extend this period.

      • If you are transiting through the airport, you shouldn't have to pay the fee.

Also take US dollars with you (preferably fairly new and exact money) just in case. A couple of years ago I arrived late at night and none of the credit card machines were working and would take my Westpac Card. Luckily I had the cash as a backup.

        • Trust me, they make you take a local flight in order to squeeze that fee out of ya :( ah and if paying with cash, be sure your bills are pristine as they won’t accept a tiny rip or poor state of bill

          • +1

@greenlantern: Santiago to Lima is not local, you transit in international and you don't have to pay the fee. I have no idea what you're referring to when you say 'local' flight but going to Peru via Santiago in April this year, I did NOT pay this fee.

            • @lainey13: Thanks.

Did you book a separate itinerary?

              • +1

@movieman: No it was all the same itinerary.
If you do book separate flights then u run the risk of missing your connecting flight as they are not connected, and risk having to leave international airside to clear customs and pickup baggage to recheck into connecting flight. This will DEFINITELY trigger a fee then. If you do not intend to pay this fee then I highly recommend you book your onward international destination as one ticket as on separate tickets your luggage will most likely not be checked through all the way, thus triggering the required exit and thus fee charge just to pickup your baggage.

            • @lainey13: Hi lainey13, there is a special row just for Australians at the airport 😳 I was heading to La Paz, Bolivia and travel guy assured me I wouldn’t have to pay but there goes $100+ fee, luckily I was by myself unlike the lady with 4 kids in front of me, I had to make like 2 local stops on the way there, man that was long.

Another tip: find flights and ask an agent to hold for you. Agents can hold flights for 24-48 hours I believe? It buys you a few days to decide at the price you find. All agents will be able to match the price, and hold especially for international flights.

  • It’s time to make that once-in-a-lifetime trip happen.

Didn't know Australians were only allowed to visit Santiago once per lifetime 🤨

  • Anyone know if the route will change when Qantas replaces these last few 747s with Dreamliners?

Direct flights to Sao Paulo would be pretty sweet and offer a whole different set of connections than Santiago.

    • +1

Unlikely. Even though LATAM is pulling out of Oneworld, they have indicated that they will continue to codeshare with Qantas. Years ago, I flew direct to Buenos Aires but there were very limited connections and Qantas dropped this route. I can;t see them trying to reopen this route either as Aerolineas Argentinasis a member of Skyteam. If they were to fly direct to Brazil, who would they team up with? Gol would be the only other alternative to LATAM but it is a low-cost carrier so very unlikely.

I think it is more likely Qantas will continue to codeshare with LATAM but the amount of FF seats available will be harder even harder to get than now.

  • Anybody done a Ayahuasca ceremony?
Is it worthy of the hype or just wretched?

    • oooh ..even the Cicadas have gone quiet! …

  • I was able to book Melb and Bris return to Lima for $1100 this morning for May/June 2020. Some booking websites still have the cheaper fare available (I searched on Kayak). Bargain!
