Just in case anyone is feeling a bit nostalgic, you can pick up the older gears games for super cheap at the moment on CDKeys. They also have gears 4 on there for 5 bucks something.

360 game which is backwards compatible on xbox one
For games that were released on both XB1 and XBOX360 (backwards compatible) is it always wise to get the XB1 version? Assuming the Xb1 version will be better graphics?
the games were never released on xbox one they were just made backwards compatible, upon putting the code into your xbox one store your xbox will proceed to download the backwards compatible version

@TightTerry: i see, in general if the game has re-released on xbox one the companies (to use your example Rockstar) would never bother to configure the game for backwards compatibility as it is already available. I would have assumed there’s no difference given the game hasn’t received a remaster and it’s just a matter of how the games being listed. Could be wrong but.
@Smigit: It depends. For Gears 3, on XB1X, there is some advantage. It's essentially a patched version with improved texture it seems.

However, there is only so much Microsoft can do so for Gears 1, a remake was done - Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.
@netsurfer: I may be wrong, but from memory if they patched a game to include better textures for the Xbox One then that applies irrespective of whether you are using the copy purchased on the 360 or One store or even inserting the disc (which causes a download anyway). It’s a part of the backwards compatibility support where some games get enhancements.
As such it’s only an issue if you plan on playing on an old 360 vs a One. Otherwise the store of purchase won’t matter still.
@Smigit: You were trying to answer the version question, I was commenting on the graphics side - i.e. even the same version, it does play better on XB1.
That whole question wasn't really a valid question - not for Gears 2 and 3 since there is only 1 version for those. However, for Gears 1, there is a choice of Gears 1 (XB360 - back compat is possible) vs Gears Ultimate. Gears Ultimate is better.
However, honestly, with GamePass Ultimate being $1 now, it doesn't make sense to buy any of those right now unless you really love Gears series.. but people asking these questions clearly aren't true die hard gears fans.
@netsurfer: Ahh gotcha. And yes, GamePass is a very good way to access the games at this time. Gets you Gears 5 also.
It may not exactly be what you were asking, but if you have the Xbox One X you can play Darksiders (360) and Darksiders Warmastered Edition (XB1).
The 360 release received a patch that makes it play at 4k, but only 30fps, whereas the Warmastered version plays at 1080p60fps.

Are GOW 1, 2 and 3 playable on PC like Gears 4 and Gears 5?
GoW1 has a PC release but It predates Play Anywhere by probably close to 10 years so I’m not sure.
I don’t think 2 and 3 ever got PC releases.
I already purchased the game turns out it doesn't work with PC plus I don't own the Xboxone. 😞
Gears Ultimate is basically Gears 1 remake BUT with Gears 1 PC version's additional missions. I don't have Gears 1 PC version so I don't know about the cutscenes. My interpretation is that Gears Ultimate had all the cutscenes re-done.
What I suggest you try to do is to contact Microsoft Support (maybe XBox/GamePass support). Inform them you thought Gears Ultimate, 2 and 3 are PlayAnywhere titles, rather than XBox exclusives and purchased them by mistake, see if they can refund the money to you. XBox support staff are generally quite nice.
If you cannot get a refund, then join Microsoft Rewards and accumulate enough points to exchange for a Coles or JB HiFi $5 gift card. It takes time, but quite doable.
