[PC] Free - Crusader Kings II @ Steam

1280

Greetings everyone, this game went free overnight and seems like a good giveaway :)

From what information I've managed to gather, this is now a permanent change to be Free to Play (previously paid).

The Dark Ages might be drawing to a close, but Europe is still in turmoil. Petty lords vie against beleaguered kings who struggle to assert control over their fragmented realms. The Pope calls for a Crusade to protect the Christians in the Holy Land even as he refuses to relinquish control over the investiture of bishops - and their riches. Now is the time for greatness. Expand your demesne and secure the future of your dynasty. Fill your coffers, appoint vassals, root out traitors and heretics, introduce laws and interact with hundreds of nobles, each with their own agenda.
A good lord will always need friends to support him. But beware, as loyal vassals can quickly turn to bitter rivals, and some might not be as reliable as they seem… Stand ready, and increase your prestige until the world whispers your name in awe. Do you have what it takes to become a Crusader King?
Crusader Kings II explores one of the defining periods in world history in an experience crafted by the masters of Grand Strategy. Medieval Europe is brought to life in this epic game of knights, schemes, and thrones…

As always, enjoy!

      Same… never played it either.

        I'm hearing echos :)

        The same.

      • It's great…. with the DLCS.

Looks like it has gone free to play.

Makes sense considering how much DLC there is for this game (which outside of Steam sales is always stupidly priced)

There are some amazing community made mods and total conversions that won't cost a cent though (might require a couple of the expansions though)

    • Only once in the past 3 years have the DLCs more more than 50% off (I had picked up the older ones at 75% off). For poor people, there are 2 tools I know of that can activate DLCs you don't own on Steam if you have at least a legitimate copy of the base game, but for some game like Crusader Kings 2 the DLCs have separate depots (extra files) that one needs to acquire as well for the DLC activators to work.

    awesome game. super complex though.

It's a really good game and will give you hours of entertainment if you're into historical simulation type games, but them giving away the base game is probably to attract gateway income for the many DLCs that addicted players like myself end up buying…

  • Crusader Kings II is already in your Steam library

I picked this up a while ago when it was free. Tried it but could not get my head around it.

One day I'll get made redundant and be able to spend my unemployed time playing games like this that I've been avoiding :P

Sweet, now I'll understand all the Crusader Kings memes about your son killing your father who is his father with your mistress…

Can't see hwo to add to library, just available as free to play

    • I couldn't figure it out either. So I think you're right, because F2P games generally can't be added to your library.

      • Is it one of those free weekend situations rather than actually free?

    • Thanks for the update, went digging a bit more and it seems like this is just a permanent change to the Free to Play from previously paid rather than a limited time offer, so I'll remove that detail out of the OP for clarity.

  • Do you have any source for the permanent free to play thing? I could not find anything on it hence I did not post it.

    • Read it on a few forums and news articles from the last 24 hours, I don't have a direct source from Paradox which 100% confirms this however.

      • OK. I hope Paradox does not do a U-turn and this is just a temporary free to play. Cannot check it as it is already in my account.
        Thank you.

        • I really hope so, last thing I want is to share misinformation.

Am I correct in saying if the game shows up here then it's permanently free? Or do free weekend games show up there too? You'd have a much better idea than I would.

          • @doweyy: I believe you are right but I have never checked if a game that is temporarily free would also show up there and I think it could as if you do a search at a certain point in time and the game happens to be free at that point in time, it should show up.
If you read it in some articles and given Paradox's DLC policy it does make sense they make it permanently free now. Hence I would not worry - I am sure what you shared is entirely correct.

Warning do not expect to invest less than 100 hours into this game! If you play it you play it HARD!

The funniest review of CK2 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE4txj_8tqA

  • This is one of my favourite games of all time. Serious.

Its like Civ 5 and Command and Conquer merged with epic RPG elements.

It has a steep learning curve, but is so rewarding. I highly recommend watching a "Let's Play" series on YouTube to get your bearings.

The DLC is very much worth it. It adds so much more complexity but youll have plenty of enjoyment from the base game.
