CCTV Systems Suggestions

Hi just curious what some of you guys run for home cctv or what bargains are out there.
Looking at a swann 6 or 8 cam system for my house.

Is Swan the brand to buy for value etc…

What else is ok to consider?

Budget $400-800 bucks.

Do I go poe (power over ether etc) or coax?

Don't buy swann I did and ripped it out a year later.
Not much of a budget with $800 I doubt with 8 cams they'd be good enough for the police to get a conviction from them refer back to 1st line

  • Ubiquiti G3

  • You wouldn't able to get 6 poe camera setup for $800;
    why you need that many?

all depend on what is the purpose and who you monitoring?
    internal or external?
do you want on site or off site backup?

  • I bought an Aldi "Cocoon" 8 security camera pack for $199 a few months ago for $199 (comes with a 1TB DVR). If all you care about is "bargains" (rather than having a price on your time cabling/configuring), it's not too bad. Just don't face it near trees etc or you'll be flooded with false alarms.

If you value your time, consider some Arlo Pro's (noting you'll miss the first 2-odd seconds of movement).

    • Starting with some Arlos isn't bad to get an idea of what you will get from cctv and positions.

      • Any steers on a "good set up" based on different price points? I'm going to be in the market for something soon and am looking to get a quality set up. I'm just completely new to this and don't really know where I'm going to get best bang for buck.

I've done small Arlo and Blink XT setups for family and friends. Good for watching the garage door, front door and side gates…

  • Whats wrong woth swann?
    Thinking something like this

    • Avoid BNC it'll turn your place into a mess with 8 leads coming out of the wall

  • Starter way to get an idea just buy 1 IP camera that you think your going to like and a cat6 lead to router place it around to see how many you'll think you need or get an old router bridge it and make it a wifi cam just to play around with different places.

My fixed cameras have a wider FOV using a 4mm lenses just upgraded a couple with PTZ 10x zoom and have lost about 20% of my FOV at 1x.

Another thing you can decide do you want a NVR or a old laptop home built nas with blue iris or similar https://blueirissoftware.com/ or a NAS like Qnap or bugger it just buy a kit as mentioned.
