Laptop SSD upgrade : M2 2242 suggestions

Need help on the SSD upgrade as I was not clear with M2 ssd drive.

Laptop is HP 850 G1 Elitebook with M2 2242 and HDD..

Currently having 30 gb ssd and like to upgrade m2 and leave the hdd for storage, not sure the following m2 drive will fit into it.

WD 240G Green M.2 SSD (G2 Version). Website says m2 2280?

As per specs, M2 2242 is 42 mm.. So how can i know the above model will fit as I don't see the length info..

Any other cheaper m2 suitable for this machine. I can't able to find when searching online with m2 2242 in amazon/umart/msy

Another suggestion, which software to use to take backup of the os.

Thanks in advance.

"M.2 module codes contain both the width and length of a particular module; for example, 2242 as a module code means that the module is 22 mm wide and 42 mm long, while 2280 denotes a module 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. "

2242 aren't that common, most are a lot longer, in saying that, not impossible to find

    • Hmmm, have a look, is there another hole that is back behind the M.2 drive screw hole? If so, how far is it from where the M.2 plugs in?

EDIT: What year is yours? Or do you have a picture with the back cover off that I can see?

      • Okay I have looked it up, the G1 is pretty old now, it does look like you can move the M.2 drive mounting screw back so that it fits a 2260 M.2 but I would want to see it before I tried.

It is pretty hard to find 2242 and 2260 drives for decent prices these days, all the manufacturers are making 2280 drives.

So OP you need to find a M.2 SATA (not NVMe, it won't work) drive in 2242 or MAYBE 2260. Best I can see is https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TRANSCEND-MTS430-M-2-2242-SATA3-… . Otherwise think about upgrading the main drive.

Run a crucial scan and it will show you what Crucial SSDs are compatible including what their size is. If you could post the scan link once scanned that would make it easier for us to find a guaranteed fit.

  • For M.2 2242 the only choice for 'big brands' as others have mentioned is Transcend or you can find Toshiba models on eBay. For PCIe NVME M.2 2242 you may be able to find some Lexar branded ones too.

Otherwise you'd have to look at the Chinese branded ones all over AliExpress and the downside of them is that they're usually DRAMless or have inferior flash memory. Of the Chinese brands I typically recommend Kingspec and Kingdian. I have a Chinese branded laptop that runs off two M.2 2242 Kingspec SSDs and they work well.
