  • No more worrying about driving without your licence since it’s on your phone! (As someone who changes bags often, I'm always forgetting my wallet)

    • +5

unless you happen to leave your phone behind

      • +4

Or it runs out of charge

        • +3

That's what a car charger is for …

      • +2

I tend to notice I left my phone behind when I get into my car and I can't find it to put into the dashboard mount …

  • +3

Can you use it to show police officers at traffic stops? I've been fined at leadt a handful of times for not having a meaningless plastic card on me. I even knew my License number off by heart and told it to the officer, which he used to identify me in a matter of 10 seconds. But somehow I had still committed an offense worth a few hundred dollars fine.

    • +1

Should be able to now since it's now lawful

      • +1

Just make sure you have parked the car and turn off the engine before you touch your phone.

    • +9

Yes, that's the whole point of it however remember you're not allowed to touch your phone while driving so wait until instructed to do so by the cop and I would suggest setting the handbrake and turning off the car first to ensure they don't ping you for using a mobile while driving.

    • +10

"fined at leadt a handful of times for not having a meaningless plastic card on me"

anti fine device = not meaningless
      .

    • +4

Zat is because your paperz ver not in order!

    • +1

I'm in Vic and I have only been carrying my phone with a photo of my licensed for 3 years. No problems with anyone.

      • +6

That's because in Victoria, you don't have to carry it as long as you show police within seven days or something like that if asked for it (right?)

        • +1

No idea. I show them the licensed and they take the number. They key in the number on their database and the physical card becomes irrelevant.

    • +5

If I have a Digital Driver Licence and I’m pulled over by NSW Police, when is it OK to pick up my phone to show my identification?

You can only use your mobile phone to open your Digital Driver Licence after being requested to do so by a police officer. It’s illegal to touch your phone before the police officer instructs you to do so.

      Source

      • +5

Jeezus sounds like an easy way for NSW Police to hit their quotas.

      • +2

        Obviously for the smarties,

Officer I wasnt using my phone, honest, I was just getting my license out for you to check……

Never underestimate the tricks we all use to avoid fines.

    • +5

I've been fined at leadt a handful of times for not having a meaningless plastic card on me

      Slow learner?

    • +2

You haven’t learned that the card is not meaningless if you’ve been fined several times. Also suspect that the attitude test may not have been passed if you’ve been fined several times. People who play nice often just get a warning, or opportunity to show to a police station within 24hrs.

      • -1

Nothing to do with attitude. It's a penalty offense to drive without your license card. If you get pulled over doing so you'll get a fine.

And there's nothing to do with learning either. Every normal person will lose their wallet ocassionaly or forget it at home. I tend to focus more of driving safely and observing my surroundings than memorising trivial laws.

        • Sure it’s a penalty offence but being fined a handful of times shows that you are not performing due diligence when driving a motor below. It’s not a trivial law in the context of making it easy for a police officer to fine you.

Sure, I occasionally forget my licence like many others, but to have been fined a handful of times indicates you are probably forgetting it more often than taking it. Ergo, you haven’t learned that it is important to take that plastic fine prevention device with you when you drive. Either that, or your handful of fines is actually only one and you did learn.

Having been driving since last century and pulled over many times, mostly for RBT, forgetting my wallet and getting pulled over have not yet coincided. I’m sure the majority of driver are the same, carrying a licence is easy to remember.

          • @Euphemistic: Just unlucky I guess. I've been fined for it 3 times, which is probably just a little less than the total number of times I've forgotten/lost my wallet over 12 years of driving. Like I said, when I get in my car my only focus is where I'm going, the hazards I'll face along the way, and getting the right frame of mind to arrive safely. I'm not focused on the radio station, kids in the back seat, or whether some meaningless plastic card is in my wallet. But hey I guess that makes me a bad driver according to the RMS. Not like we have a problem with crashes and fatalies or anything…

    • +3

Having been on the trial for the last 12 months I must warn everyone..

DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE TO SHOW THE POLICE YOUR LICENSE!

You must tell the police you have a digital license and then make sure they say its OK to show your phone.

Or otherwise switch OFF the engine and remove the key from the ignition before touching your phone

This is so ridiculous! So be very careful
You might be fined for trying to do the right thing

  • YAY!

  • +4

    Something went wrong.

Their servers must be getting hammered.

    • +1

Yeah, I'm spamming the app trying to "get started"…surely that helps, right? Just like pressing the elevator and street crossing buttons?!

    • +4

      Site got "OzBargained"??? :D

      We're a little busy

Many people are loading their digital licenses right now. Please try again later

      LOL. Nice one, RMS.

      • -3

        LOL. Nice one, RMS.

        Really.

Are you suggesting that spend a few more of our taxpayer dollars, to make sure impatient consumers can all download everything at the same time?

We have waited years for this surely a few more days due to high demand is ok?

Unless of course you need it to show often to our local Highway patrol group?

A side benefit is that others can find any bugs first…

        😀

        • +2

          Really.

Yes. I would just like our state government to implement a system that doesn't fall over at the first sign of being borked.

a few more days due to high demand is ok?

How do you know the demand is high? This could have be a low/medium demand period until most people work out that they can update it. If it falls over at the beginning of demand, what is the system going to be like at peak demand?

Are you suggesting that spend a few more of our taxpayer dollars,

Might be nice of them to spend it on things that all the people of this state could actually use, rather than building useless shit for Sydney citizens to enjoy, or travel rorts or useless stadiums. The state government wastes far more money on way more useless things than a borked electronic license server.

Unless of course you need it to show often to our local Highway patrol group?

And it doesn't bother me. I don't intend to use it to replace my plastic card, as that will always be in my car. And I don't need it to show my local highway patrol, because a: my plastic license is in the car already and b: I like to abide by the Aus. Road Rules and not to deal with the "rEvEnUe CoLLeCtOrZ" in the first place.

          • @pegaxs:

How do you know the demand is high?

Correct we don't, an assumption of course. Just like we dont know it was truly ozbargained LOL

what ever its working now for me. 😀

BTW 2 points on you last comment

            1. you dont need to have broken any rule to be required to show your license. Sometimes at an RBT I have been asked to show my license. even though I havent broken any rule.

            2. I dont like leaving my license in my car. I need it sometimes going to a club, and for me which car does it reside in. Driving the wifes (wives 😇) for example, and so on.

Like you I dont like giving extra tax to the government(s) so I deem having my license with me for all situations reduces that risk

But that's my choice of course..

            • +1

@RockyRaccoon: I get asked for licence at every RBT, not sometimes…isn't it SOP?

              • +1

@John Kimble: Never used to be but I think it has been for a few years now. I've been asked every time the past few years. Back when they didn't I always wondered how'd they know if they'd stopped a P plater who didn't have plates on and was supposed to be on a lower limit?

    • +1

Make sure you have the latest version of Service NSW or it wont work properly

  • No luck.
    Failed servers.

  • Meh I'm happy with the plastic version.

  • +1

App unfortunately doesn't like to work with rooted devices even with Magisk.

    • The app also checks your list of installed apps for blacklisted apps.

  • +1

Too bad it's a separate app and you can't just add it to your Apple/Google Wallet.

    • To make it harder to make fakes of

    • +1

The QR code is encrypted using a Time-based key and changes every couple of seconds. It may be difficult to get Apple/Google onboard to implementing things securely as there's no global protocol for these type of things.

The app also has an option for you to validate someone else Digital ID.

Plus it has another feature where you can check-in to a place such as an RSL or a pub by scanning in their organisation code. That way all your info would not go to the organisation database, as it used to when they scan your card.

  • Site/app been unavailable all day.

  • is it valid for red P / green P?

    • -1

Try it out and let us know? I assume the majority here are on their full licence.

  • Still down for me!? :(

Edit: finally got it! I still look like shit.

  • WTF, i am ineligible? is this just a system error or what?

    • Do you have a rooted phone?

      • +1

Nope. Galaxy s8+ with stock rom.

    • Maybe you are too young?

Make sure you have the latest version of Service NSW or it wont work properly

      • :) no way. And.. i have the latest one.

  • What can possibly go wrong…

    • Their servers get hacked and all these photo IDs get stolen?

      • Because they don’t already have them on database anyway?

  • +4

Got up at 4:30am this morning to get my digital license. Still saying "We are a little busy". Can't believe that the queue is longer than the local RMS.

  • I downloaded it yesterday but still can't access my driver's license. They've been busy for a long time………

    • +1

Make sure you have the latest version of Service NSW or it wont work properly

      • I finally got it working.

  • +2

    How weird.
I was in the trial so Ive have my digital license for a year now.
But when I checked today it was gone and I had to download it to my phone again like I never had it.
Anyway only took a few seconds luckily.

Highly recommend this transition to all Oz Bargainers !

  • Nah, doesen't work for me either.

  • +1

I just got mine, had to spam click the try again button though as it kept coming up with "we're a little busy". Worked after the 6th time.

  • Is it legal for you to "touch" your phone whilst behind the wheel? It's not as though you are doing a Macca's run.

The cop would be… "Go on, reach for it, make my day!"

    • +1

Under the NSW Road Rules, you cannot use your mobile phone while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked.

I can't find where it defines parked but it would probably be safer if you apply your handbrake, put it into P and switch off the engine before reaching for the phone.

  • "Excuse me officer, but I've gotta show you this hilarious cat video first"

  • +1

Is it really that hard to have a small piece of plastic secreted away somewhere in your car? The license has your photo on it so if the car gets stolen it's useless to someone else anyhow, even if they did find it. We did have a life before mobile phones if I remember correctly.

    • +2

Some of us drive different cars regularly. Stashing it in the car won’t work.

      • Or need it for proof of ID purposes e.g. buying alcohol

  • Which RSL or other Club has ANYONE successfully used this online ID???

I have yet to meet even one successful use.

Most clubs have no idea how to deal with it!

  • +1

Why aren't NSW PhotoCards on there, too???

  • I keep getting this message?

    • Did you call 137788?
