Sooo, opening a can of worms here but would it be sexist for me to suggest that OP should mention that the 30cm bike is, by what I personally believe to be the majority, a girls bike?

Or should I suggest that details such that it is pink with streamers be added more appropriate?

    • +7

Yeah, the 30cm bike is pink, which is my son’s favourite colour, but unfortunately this one is too small for him.

      • +4

My youngest favourite colour too!! He recently wanted a scooter and picked out a pink one with rainbows…. which is exactly the scooter he got

    • +2

      Pretty much yes…
It might be considered by the majority of adults to be a girls bike, but for <5 year old kids, it's a purple bike with pink wheels.
Hopefully our kids can grow up to continue to evaluate things for what they are, rather than by some random societal association of colour to gender.

      • The colours are arbitrary, but gender is not.
Children have very strong gender identity from before they can ride bikes, or even know what gender/sex really is.
A 4yo does not care about race, religion, or ethnicity. But they sure are aware what sex they, and their friends, are. Making toys in clearly distinct boy and girl versions increase sales. It is silly, and they grow out of it somewhat. But it is innate human nature.

My boy got a hand-me-down equivalent of this - rip off the streamers and stickers, spray-paint the pink bits, and it is sorted.

        • Children have very strong gender identity from before they can ride bikes, or even know what gender/sex really is.

It's that from a binary perspective based on physical traits or a broader spectrum?

          • +1

@StevieRay: It is about self-identity and group belonging. Especially for girls.

The point is that the extreme gender-segregation of toys is driven by the demands of kids. It was not invented by parents or marketing execs. Just exploited :)

            • @bargaino: Dammit you were supposed to bite =)

I have no problems with gender stereotyped toys being played by the other gender however I do have an issue with the extreme rectification whereby the previously gender-segregated toys are now advertised purposely with the other binary sex identity which then excludes the previously stereotyped market.

              • @StevieRay: Any examples?

                • @bargaino: At the risk of being sexist :)

An example I've seen include kitchen and cleaning toys where only boys are advertised on the boxes. I've experienced little girls not as happy with a gift from grandparents that they recieved because of it. Not that they are ungrateful brats, they are just kids after all. Why not have both boys and girls. Not so bad where there is a range of brands advertising the same space giving examples of diversity to both sexes, but some are limited and only demonstrate one over the other.

Not going to spend too much time googling toys but here is an example (note: there could very well be a girl pictured on the back of this one for all I know)

You have the capitalism to thank for pink being associated with girls and blue to be associated with girls. In thousands of years of human history, they have just been colors.

      • I mostly agree with your statement however there were number of studies on males and females may be sensitive to different regions of the color spectrum. look it up if you are interested.

    • +1

Just a flashback to the previous centuries….

      https://www.businessinsider.com/pink-used-to-be-boys-colour-…

"In the early part of the 20th Century and the late part of the 19th Century, in particular, there were regular comments advising mothers that if you want your boy to grow up masculine, dress him in a masculine colour like pink and if you want your girl to grow up feminine dress her in a feminine colour like blue."

  • Still haven't had a chance to ride the Cyclops mountain bike I got for $40 from the last deal, looks like a nice bike though

    • me too :)

  • +8

I had one of these, took a few hours to assemble but it lasted about 3 months. Very bad quality. Save money do not buy this.

  • Just noticed the second one has no brake, will pass.

    • +2

It will have a foot brake…

    • Damn just bought one for my girl, will need to return back now without the brake

      • +3

A 30cm bike has a coaster brake but no hand brake. The reasoning seems to be that small kids lack the hand strength and coordination for hand brakes. Indeed it is easier to find 30cm bikes without hand brakes than ones with them. And finding one without a coaster brake is completely impossible.

        • Coaster brakes on kids bikes are mandatory when sold new in Australia by law. Though what you do with the brake after purchase is up to you… :)

Hand brakes for kids are tricky because they need to be light enough for their fingers, yet have strong and controllable stopping power - kids bikes with them tend to be more expensive than dept store bikes. Have a look at the byk bikes - they have both and are very light for the features.

    • +3

That's what walls, fences, parked cars & pedestrians are for.

    • +1

Kids that young just use their feet to brake anyway.

    • Use a brick wall, or a car, or a hooman or a cat… Everything is a "brake" if you're brave enough.

16kg bmx bike for a 7 year old? That's close to 70% body weight. Yikes!

  • I'm surprised the Cyclops brand still exists. Bought a Cyclops BMX back in 2007 from Kmart for around $160. Not sure if the build quality is still the same but at the time it was pretty sturdy and well built.

    Thank you op.
Estimated collection is 6th nov. hope I get one.

Unfortunately, your order has been cancelled.
Your order has been cancelled due to insufficient stock.

  • 360 degree cable rotor :O

    • Yeah, I was trying to work out how that might operate
Guessing there's a little finger(s) connected to the top plate that lifts the bottom plate to transfer the lever pull to the brake cable?

    • Kmart terminology for a non genuine Gyro.

Unless your child needs to do more than 2 barspins or tailwhips it's just extra weight.
