JB Hi Fi Mobile Telstra Plan change Assistance

I currently have a Pixel 2XL on a 24 month contract through that Job Hi-Fi $59/20gb per month plan early last year. It will cost me ~$350 to terminate it early to upgrade (ends late April). Because of upcoming work starting December, the 20gb per month will no longer be enough and as such I estimate that I will need 60gb+ of data a month. I see that JB is currently doing their $65 a month deal with 60gb/80gb of data (depending on contact length I believe). However that is only available for new or port-in customers only, which sadly is not applicable to me as I am currently with Telstra.

What are my courses of action? If need be, as a last resort I am willing to see out this contract as the upcoming work only goes until the end of February. But the additional data for only a few more dollars a month is worth the effort though, in my opinion.

I understand that for me to get onto this plan I will need to port-out and port back in but to my knowledge that could take a really long time. Also, I'm not entirely sure how that whole porting system works, can someone with more knowledge explain it to me. The name of the plan I am on is the Go Mobile Plus BYO Plan - $59.

Thank you

  • Change the plan and increase allowance. Or register a Vodafone/Virgin/Optus SIM under another identity and then sign up for the plan.

  • people mentioned getting a second service and once the first plan ends, moving the original plan mobile number to second plan.

Do you have a spare second phone you could hotspot to?

If so perhaps look at taking up a mobile broadband month to month service until your contract is up. That will be the most minimal expense method. Telstra's mobile BB plans now have piece of mind data so no extra costs and start at $15 per month

    • Does that Piece of mind data mean I can get the small package of 5gb and just not care if I use like 50gb off of it? I feel like that has some sort of fine print, that sounds too good to be true

It's true, just limited to 1.5mbps after your initial quota. If high download speed isn't a problem then it might be a good temporary solution

        • That sounds really, really good. I think that'd be a solid solution. I don't think I will need to worry about download speeds. Thank you for telling me about this.

Edit: I just checked out the website and it appears that the extra small and small monthly package are on a free trial until 30/06/2020. That looks to only be for 5G though, oh well. Still good by the sounds of it.

  • If you plan on doing the port out/in route, technically you’re meant to be out for 30 days… whether it’s actually adhered to is another question

    • With my past few experiences with my JB store, they are pretty spot on to following the rules and guidelines. Still a worthy shout though, thanks

      • There was a big crackdown after a few months ago staff were found to be not adhering to the port rules, so they basically said if they don’t follow, no commissions

You should be able to go into JB and upgrade to that plan but you won't get the bonus gift card or phone credit. I've done in before a year ago but it might have changed just ask.

    • If I can do that, that's no issue to me. I don't mind this phone at the moment, still goes good. I'll be going in today and see how it goes. Thank you for that

I jumped on the JB $65/mo with $500 GC by porting out to Lebara and back. Technically, you need to be out for 30 days+ to get a freebie, but if you're not into that, then it's just porting time, which took 5 days for me.
