Credit Cards - What's the best option

Given that I'm with NAB I'm looking at the NAB Velocity Reward Gold Card, this is because I fly with Etihad a lot for international flights, and they have a partnership with virgin. This was I can earn/use points more effectively.

BUT !!!!!!

Is the virgin money card a better option, simply because of the buy one get one free flight offer? What are peoples experiences of this offer? Is it really worth it, are you limited to the blue saver tickets only? Do you actually save the money?

Alternatively what are the current best credit card options on the market?

Thanks

Depends what you mean by best, this site shows the best credit card for each category such as balance transfers or no annual fee cards.

  • Questions you have to answer:

    1. Do you fly with Virgin (domestically) often?
    2. How much do you spend on your credit card each month?

    Factors to consider:

    1. Rate of earning points with the Virgin Flyer credit card is halved after your first $1500 each month.
    2. Buy one get one free flight - availability is somewhat limited, I think. Since they collapsed their fare types (from 4 to 3), things might have changed. In the past, they would only let me use my free flight if there was a "super saver" fare available, but I would have to pay the "normal saver" fare for the first ticket.

E.g. two fares, $75 and $120 available throughout the day, but $75 fare only available for some flights. In order for me to get the free flight, I would have to travel on the flight that still has the $75 fare.

However, instead of paying $75 for the first fare, I have to pay $120. So… I end up paying $120 for two people with the free flight. The other option is: $150 for two fares (without the free flight). So really, you save only $30 in this example. On top of that, you still have to pay extra for luggage ($12 pp) and $4.50 credit card fees for both flights!!

You've got to weigh up those conditions with other conditions put up by the NAB Velocity Gold card.

    ALSO…
when I got my card - travel insurance was included. It might have changed again, as they now have the Virgin HIGH FLYER card as well. The Virgin Flyer card doesn't seem to have any international travel insurance included. http://virginmoney.com.au/credit-card/flyer/cards/
